Last night Matt (member mlessard) and I started the Wiseco big bore on his '04 Speedmaster. It took us 3 hours of actual work to get it totally torn down and the heads and jugs are now in the back of my car. I will drop them off at the machine shop later this afternoon. I was surprised how quickly we got it torn apart too. Ed (biker) stopped in and assisted in giving directions too. So, tonight we'll yank the clutch out and get it all ready to toss back together in a few more days. Hopefully the machine shop won't take too long, they only took about 5 days to do mine last time. We're also getting the heads ported too. I'll keep ya posted on this saga too. Oh yea, there are some differences in the '04 model that make it a little easier. I will get some new batteries for my digicam and post them later on. Stay tuned for next the episode of "Wiseco Hospital", immedietly following "As the crank turns", evenings at 6pm.

Pat,
That's great news! It would also be good if, afterward, a dyno chart could be done.
I'm going to have it done.

I just dropped the parts off and they told me $100 per cylinder and $100 for porting. Total machine shop charges to be $300. Good deal, If anyone wants to use him he said he is happy to do anyones for the same. He also needs the Wiseco complete kit too if you want to send stuff to him.

Those are my favorite shows With enough info out there, maybe I will do my BB this winter... I've been riding too much to do any maintenance other than cleaning the bugs off. Although there's never too much riding.

Gee Pat, I could have saved some bones shipping my stuff to you. You not only can do it, - but you can do it on a shoestring. Oh well, money's no object. -BT

So far Matt's into the job for a 12 pack of Saranca, which he helped drain. I don't really have a rate, depends on how much and what kind of beer is provided. Temperature of the beer is imoprtant too, I don't like it really cold, slightly cooler than room temperature is good for me. And also if you help, then it goes up.
Ryan, there, ya happy now? By the way, all the pictures have beer bottles in them, empties of course.

Pat - I have the Wiseco kit sitting in my closet and am debating on whether or not to do it myself. My local shop (RPM Cycle, Dallas) has done one so far, and they are a very well respected shop. They certainly would love to do mine! They did tell me though, that on the one they did install, they removed some weight from the pistons themselves to match the weight with the old pistons. They said it was to preserve the engines "balance". Did you do this? If not, did you notice any more vibration than before? Just curious. And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Wyrm74, I didn't bother doing anything to the pistons. Wiseco is pretty good about having balanced pairs anyway. I just assumed they were good to go.

i would say that pat has the right idea here the psitons don't need to weight what the ones you threw away did they need to weight the same as each other.

Nathan - Keith said he'd do it for about $1200, that includes having the head ported/flowed and matched to the intakes. That sounds like a pretty good price to me compared to other quotes I've gotten. They were closer to $1500-$2000.

bonnyusa - That's with me supplying the parts. I already have the big-bore kit, I think the only other parts I'll need are the gaskets. Time will tell I suppose, these things have a way of taking on a life (and price) of their own!

You supply all the parts and still $1200? Heck, bring it up here, I'll do them for that all day long. The head porting/machine work can be done here for $300, say $600 for kit and misc parts needed, that comes to about $900 for labor. I could live with that. Maybe I need to have Matt buy more beer? Or just more of the Youngs Double Chocolate Stout.
Edit: Parts needed:
Clutch cover gasket
Right hand side cover gasket
(2) exhaust gaskets
(2) O-rings for oil breather tube
(2) O-rings for oil feed tube on top of cams
4-5 misc copper washers (or anneal the old ones)
Barnett MT-5-4 heavy duty clutch springs
4 quarts of standard petroleum 10-40w oil
Oil filter
Misc valve shims if required.
(4) Valve cover bolt hole seals, if you have taken it off more than twice already.
I spent about $60 at the dealer the other day ordering all these parts.

Absolutely right - I do owe you some brew and with all this Big Bore talk I'm getting in the mood myself sometime for early spring 2006. Btw - does the kit ever go on sale? I only ever see it at $500 these days. Is Matt using the extra one you have had for a while now? I just can't continue to run with 2 local Speedie guys with 904's and not join in on the fun too. So what'll it be? A case of SARANCA? Please don't delete me!

yes, but rarely yes, it's my spare kit we're installing I've grown partial to the Southerntier Brewing stuff lately. They have a nice Belgian ale that will hurt ya quickly. If you need me to assist with yours, you will need a nice heated space to work in, like Matt has. And several cases will be a good start.

That can easily be arranged. I'd probably wait until closer to spring however for the install (not to get the cases of beer) when I have some extra cash. I'll be in touch.
Hey any further developments on your relocating?

Hey where is Matt's nice "heated" space that you referred to. I was down at his place with you and I can't picture this "space".

So far Jane has sold her house, closes on the 30th of Dec. I am having a final open house today, if it doesn't sell in the next two weeks it will stay off the market until Springtime. Matt has a very nice big shop at his work in downtown Honeoye. It is huge with a ton of room, heat, beer fridge, toilet and even cheap tunes. Don't know if he can use it for other stuff though, but his boss seems to be a pretty nice guy to let him use it. There is also this 12 cylinder airplane engine in there on a hoist. I'm trying to figure how to mount that in my Speedy.

I am a food facility designer. I design commercial kitchens and I have the following rate schedule for my clients: design $100 per hour if you watch $125 per hour if you help $150 per hour It would help if you could open a Philadelphia office. You are a bit far for me to travel. I would be glad to drop off speedy, a case of beer and come back when the bike was done!

No problem, I have it all figured out for Matt too. It just won't start for some unknown reason until I get a few required $$, then it will miraculously work! Sorry, even Matt's gonna have to cough up some bucks, the beer just helps keep me there for the moment. Theres free web pages and then there's many hours of dirty work, and let's not forget Christmas.

Here's my update; Got the machined parts back from Steve at Seely Engine Machine, schweet! Beautiful job, the intake billets were also ported/ground to match the intake ports and Steve told me he took off over 1/4" of crap. They are absolutely perfectly matched up now. Sunday night I am going back over to Matt's to finish it up, just waiting on one part (a locating dowel I mangled getting out - better than dropping it in the motor I reckon, eh BT?) Hopefully be firing it up Sunday night.

Pat,
You should've dropped that thing in Matt's bottom-end. It's been great fun!
But seriously, - there's never been any doubt that you're the better wrencher. Heck, if it wasn't for you doin the trail-blazin last winter, and recording the whole thing with HTML codes, I wouldn't have take it on.
Good luck on Sunday.
