That is an amazing number. I would guess then that at least a million deer die that way?

You're amazed by the number of deer killed, but, I'm absolutely frightened by the number of human casualties.
I'm not a hunter, but once was. I understand the idea of preserving the resource. But when there are now more deer per sq. mi. than there was 200 years ago - when there was room for them - something smells fishy.
When more people are killed by deer than bears, crocs, wolves, poisonous snakes and every other north american animal of prey combined - Its time to take a look.
Put them all in flourescent orange so they can be seen and kill them ALL. Ya, that's the ticket. KILL 'EM ALL!

More deer per square mile total over the entire US, or more per square mile where they are? I mean there's no deer in NYC... but a bunch in Vermont, ya know? I thought they were getting driven into more dense pockets, hence the "overpopulation".

Those are interesting numbers. Deer everywhere. I've hit two with my pickup and I tend to be very carefull in the first place. I've been lucky on the bike, but more than once have seen a whitetail standing by the roadside as I zoom by. An adrenaline rush for certain, which usually hits about a mile down the road.
We are about inundated in this little burg, Evenings I have anywhere from 4-8 standing in the yard staring at me. A regional wildlife biologist recently suggested that we might consider a "town hunt" to reduce numbers and scatter them back into the wilds. Town hunts raise all sorts of issues however. They get so used to people, that they start getting a bit brazen & will sometimes chase people. Mule deer seem to stay away, but the whitetails adjust quickly to urban environments. Many parts of the country have similar problems.

It's hard to believe Iowa didnt even make the top ten. there seems to be more deer than rabbits around here. the rut propably has more to do with me putting the bike away than the weather. They sure do taste good though...

If you read that article close, you will see that the survey results seem to come from the claims recorded by only 1 insurance company, State farm..
If that's truly the case, imagine what the numbers really are!

If we could get more of the deer to wear dot approved helmets many of their lives would be spared.

I went from Cranbury PA to Breezewood last night on the PA Turnpike, believe me that was on my mind the entire way. I-70 from Breezewood to Hagerstown is also ripe with deer. I used to travel to Cumberland MD from Hagerstown, about 70 miles. One morning, I counted 23 dead deer on the way there! I had 250,000 miles on my Nissan, 129,000 miles on my Honda and haven't hit one yet - I keep my St. Christophers medal on at all times! I'm sure one of these nights my luck will run out, the odds are awful for me.

Driving (car)into work tonight, I came very close to hitting some deer crossing the highway. I didn't see them until they were almost directly infront of me...no eye reflections at all...swerved & thankfully got by them & it was a good thing they were just creeping across...now I just have to get through the night shift with sh*tty underwear. Be careful out there guys...this was at 5:45 pm
