Cutting coils is not a good idea unless you want to stiffen your suspension by an unknown amount - a little bit can make a huge difference.

Get or rent shock spring compressor designed for the job. Like this: http://www.psep.biz/store/suspension_tools.htm Then hack at your own risk. The stock shocks are oversprung anyway (which is why progressives are so popular) so you could get lucky.
