So...after spending all morning/afternoon/evening buried in maps, I've decided I need a road trip. Only problem is, is whether or not I should take it.
Let me be more clear. So, it seems I'll be able to skip out for a week in late August/early September, seeing as we won't be mining for 4-6 weeks. Hearing the news, I'm elated as the big bossman told me before that I won't be able to take a single day off of work until we finish mining, which will be some time around April.
Nonetheless...I'm incredibly torn right now. See, I'll have 3 weeks of vacation built up by next Spring and there's a slim chance that I'll be able to take all 3 weeks off at once. Not a great chance, but a chance nonetheless. So far I've only ridden in 28 states, and If I can get those 3 straight weeks off come April or May, I have a 9,000 mile roadtrip roughly planned which will allow me to ride thru the remaining 20 of the lower 48. Which means I can then focus my future efforts towards getting a bike and a route that'll take me Prudhoe Bay, AK and back.
So anyways...back to the problem at hand. Do I take the week off in August, or hold onto it until Spingtime in hopes of the crapshot of 3 consecutive weeks? If I take the time off in August, I'll only have enought time that one week for a tour of the deep south...GA lowlands along the gulf to Galveston, TX, until I run out of time and have to head back to NY. I think that'll be a good trip as well...but nothing like a 23-day, 9,000 trek zigzagging the country.

Easy one.. save your vacation time for the spring.. around mid-August, start complaining of various aches, pains and other 'symptoms'. Come the end of August, call in sick for a week, with something that needs you to visit a doctor out of state. Cheers, Brad (woo hoo - no longer an 'Adjunct'!!!)

I'd take the week, you never know what the future holds. April 2010 sounds like a long way off now, doesn't it?

eh...I think I'm going to put all of my eggs in one basket. As nice as it would be to take a week off soon, just the chance of 3 weeks off at once (in reality probably only 15-20% chance I'll be able to pull it off) is more than enough.
I'm going to talk to the bossman next week to see what his views are...although we're bidding another job which, if we win, the notice to procede should be right about the same time as when we'll hole through on this job.

I became a fan of lit ciggie butts/bare feet at 1.5 paces. It's a real crowd pleezer. Fun for young and old alike But that's just me. jh
