I don't know if it's there on previous years by my 09 speedy has a little bar just inside the tank. It stops the nozzle from going into the tank very far and I end up splattering gas on the tank unless I just let it trickle in. Is it meant to be some kind of marker for how high to fill the tank? I hate getting gas on the tank, especially after a fresh coat of wax.

I believe the fuel pump unit is directly below the filler neck. I think the bar is a stop to keep one from bashing said unit.
I carry a rag that I wrap around the nozzle after inserting it. Eliminates the splash.

I dont have an 09 so you could have something different if its fuel injection...but do you mean the tank tunnel inside? A gas tank has a tunnel through the center so it wraps around the frame backbone. Is that what you mean?

broke, there's a small round bar, about 1/8" thick, that sits between 1/4 and 1/2" below the bottom opening in the filler neck.

I just don't see the reason behind it. I was thinking of taking some snips and just cutting it out but I'll wait on one you guys to try it first.

You kids with your new fangled gas tanks!...haha
Engineers dont exactly design little bars for no reason. It probably serves a purpose that us normal consumers dont quite see. New bikes like that have factory warranties to void in the future, so keep that in mind. Sure does sound annoying though.

I guess I didn't really find it annoying. 1st time I filled the tank, I noticed the splash back droplets, so just started using a rag. No issue, at least for me.

That's what I do now. I just gas it up really slow and stand by with a rag or paper towels from the gas station.
