I will be test riding the Thunderbird at 9am on Saturday. Seen the bike this evening at the official launch - black, short tors which looked and sounded the mutts nuts (must confess I rev her up some - just had too). I ride for 1 hour (test rides are fully booked for the weekend and I'm first out) and will report back with an unofficial ba.com test ride report. As for the launch it is worth noting that 2 tone silver and black is breathtaking, front needs auxiliary lamps to finish off the styling, build quality looks outstanding, radiator only downside on looks and for some reason is exagerated on the 2 tone silver (like it doesn't belong). Was given their press pack which states Cycle World declared the Thunderbird best cruiser in its class. Well I will be comparing it to our very own tba and will let you know - only problem is the weather is not so good - RAIN and lots of it.

[image]http:// [/image] And so it came to pass….my test ride of the Thunderbird! This is the demonstrator standard black apart from the short TORS. I set off to the dealers on by tba and had a traffic free jouney for most of the way into York (England) picking my way through the villages (B1228) of Melbourne, Sutton on Derwent and Elvington and I thought to myself this Thunderbird is gonna have to be good to match the tba. In short the ride to the dealers was perfect in every way. I had one hour to put the T’bird through its paces and see what she had to offer. The weather was just perfect (forecast of rain never materialised – do they ever get it right – I mean ever!)! The look of the bike has been well documented but when I threw your leg over what struck was there was nothing much in front of me. No big spedo, headlamp and spots, the instruments are on the tank and the headlamp more discreet. This was already a different bike before we started our hour long courtship. Even the keys are in a different position, actually the only thing (and the average brakes perhaps) that I don’t like about the tba. So we are now both fired up and raring to go. The sound in more of a rumble, but you know it is ready to release a thunder storm the moment you command. Out of the dealership and through the town it is amazingly agile and very nippy. Lane splitting and weaving through the traffic is almost effortless. The gear changing is smooth, the power on tap and has the kick of a mule when you need/want it. The brakes are a dream, I mean they are awesome. Once I had picked my way through town I dropped onto some nice open road (A63) to release the ponies. Winding back the throttle them ponies each gave me a kick in the back – this is a flying machine! I have ridden a few sport bikes in my time and I swear to you this is a sports bike, a sports bike with torque combined with ponies. Now I must confess I am not a passive rider and enjoy pushing the bikes a little. So the A63 was used to test the speed of the T’bird if you see what I mean. It passed the test! Now for some twisties, I rode along some unclassified roads through Skipwith and down onto the A163 to Bubwith and then back up to Melbourne (the way I came in on my tba). She performed magnificently and rode like the sports bike she wasn’t. At this point I couldn’t get this out of my head – this is every bit as good as any sports bike I have ridden. At one point I even thought about getting my knee down – but I thought better of it! I was becoming more familiar with the bike. It is easy to ride, and delivers the product on tap, power, breaking, torque and it is so smooth in the process.

Now for the verdict: Build Quality 10/10 It quality, paint, chrome, detail instruments the lot! Brakes 8/10 Brilliant – ABS is apparently fantastic however only tested standard Engine 10/10 Out of this world! Handling 10/10 Put many sports bikes to shame – the best handling cruiser on the planet! Comfort 7/10 At 6’2’ a little cramped but as good as the tba (I am yet to find a bike that fits me like a glove) Looks 7/10 It needed something on the front – a fly screen and some spots. There are many accessories to fully loaded it would improve the rating somewhat. Sound 7/10 Not as good as the short TORS on the tba in my opinion but aftermarket will take care of that minor problem. Overall Verdict: The Thunderbird is definitely FAB! It is a winner! I Hardly rider I was speaking to announced he was switching to Triumph – it has started! Now here is the funny thing – I love my tba (so much so that my missus might have to give up her side of the bed). It has provenance, it is British and American joined at the hip and I like it very much. Am I going to buy one, maybe, probably, I don’t know! I am normally the most impulsive decisive person I know but for once I can’t make up my mind. [image] [/image]

Good point - they should be! It had a street bike feel to it at times (rode the Tripple R - great fun).
With the accessories (apparently extends to £8,000 sterling) you can make it your own. For me, 2 tone (silver and black), ABS, highway pegs on engine bars, sissy bar, aux lights, colour coded rad, paniers (only for touring), fly screen and sat nav (for touring) now that gonna be a fine looking bike! will come in around £12k though so need to raid the piggy bank!

Great writeup! I rode a Tbird last weekend at Triumph Demo Day at Capitol Triumph in Harrisburg, PA and loved it. Thought it was just about perfect in every respect.

You summed it up perfectly!
I had a test ride of an R3 (which was very impressive) and a Rocker C - which is the best HD IMO but fell short of the mark (both the R3 (performance) and the Thunderbird (performance and looks) are far better). So I made my decision...
I have ordered a Thunderbird today though I changed my mind on the colour!
The spec I have opted for is as follows:
Black ABS Sissy Bar Lockable filler cap Engine bars & Highway pegs Short TORS Fog Lamps Instrument Visor Luggage Rack

Now where is that piggy bank?!

Must admit had similar thoughts but rode it and I fell in lust! With the addition of accessories (essential) I will love the bike I have no doubt. Stock bike is almost a blank canvas allowing an aftermarket to flourish. If you get chance have a ride on one with short pipes.

I am considering a Thunderbird. I haven't riden one yet and probably won't in the near future. My question is how does it compare with our bike comfort wise. Is the ride smoother at 70 mph. Is the suspension much better.
Don't get me wrong I'm not bad mouthing my America. It's a great bike around the city and a 200 mile radius, but long trips just beat the ****** out of me. I hate showing up at work monday mourning feeling like I've been in a bar fight. If I go for a T-Bird, I'll keep the America, I love it for what it does.

I got to ride the T-Bird today. It's... well... it's ok. It's bulky. Feels like every other big crusier. It was not uncomfortable, but wasnt comfortable either. Very blasé. It is impossible to see the speedo without completely taking your eyes off the road. I'll give it one thing though, it's fast. 0-60 in the blink of an eye. Other than that, there was really nothing exciting about it. Nothing about that bike really excites me. I would rather have it just for a drag bike rather than a daily driver or even a touring bike. For either of those, my Speedmaster is just that, The Master. Oh, I forgot to mention the T-Bird does have a built in foot massager.

Was the vibration that bad? I've seen them, sat on them, but haven't had a chance to ride one yet. Not really looking for a replacement for my BA.

That ain't right! Something's wrong!
Check your air pressures and rear shock preload, but I would never say that after even a 600 mile day......Your's can be made better than that I know!

I agree, you need to maybe look at the seat, shock, tire combination and do some tweaks. I hear the progressive rear shocks make a big difference in the ride. On my last trip to Eureka Springs, I had my tires at 44 and that was way too hard. 32-34 would be better. I can do 500 plus days on mine. I'm numb and tired, but you would be on anything after 500 or 600 miles, even a Goldwingie.

Well Ed, the report on your Tiger is spot on with what Tricia Szulewski, full time staff writer for Road Bike magazine in the July issue said. She tested a 2009 orange Tiger for a year. "I love this bike!...Triumph's Tiger is your do-it-all motorcycle, if their ever was one. Sportbike riders can appreciate the Tiger's powerful torquey, liquid-cooled DOHC, in-line three cylcinder engine. Standard and dual sport lovers will be grateful for the sit-up seating position, low pegs, and wide bars. Dual sporters will also appreciate that tall legs, which trace back to the older, more off-raod, adventure oriented Tiger. You folks who like to tour can comfortably put several hundred miles on the odometer in a day". She did an Iron butt ride from Connecticut to Ohio and back within 24 hours. She goes on to say... "What you don't know is that I experienced no discomfort at all. Not for a minute. And as a matter of fact, if it weren't for needing sleep, I could have comfortably ridden all the way to the West Coast on that Tiger. And back again." It's just that it's hard for me to believe I guess since I only got to ride one for a half hour at a Triumph truck event. I'm keeping my eyes open and if Triumph inc. doesn't get their butt in gear with a new Trophy I might just try and buy a 2010 Triumph Tiger Special Edition to keep my TBA company. I guess I should have put this in a Tiger thread.Ooops.

Yes, at about 3000 rpm, but goes away about 4500 rpm.

know before you jump all over me i know people that can do this and more NP on thier TBS/speedy.. but you need to understand not everyone can....

not true... I also own a 2007 triumph Tiger.. and can do 600 to 1000 miles days with out any pain..and not numb..and that 2 up with my wife ..
Ed
my bro in law is lucky enough to work for a triumph dealership so has the chance to ride most triumphs at some point his only comment on the thunderbird was it fast. he used to have go on a 50 mile round trip to collect tax and often took a demo bike and to start with it was the rocket that was till he tried the tiger after that never used rocket again he always used tiger recons it far mor comfy and agile better suited for riding in cities as well as having the power on main roads so when he has choice of all the demo bikes to use as he might have to do a little run somewhere it is always the tiger now

I bet when they get the Sceptres for the T-Bird, that will be a incredible sound!
Oddly enough, having seen the bike twice, sat on it ( it fits me like it was made for me ), and looked it over thoroughoy, I think its the REAL DEAL. I disliked it in pictures, but it is beautiful in person ( though, the rear fender could be different, and the pipes need to be changed out ). The quality of the goods, the details, are great and of the best quality of any Triumph bike. No plastic all over, its solid, metal turn signals, most all chrome is real, not plastic crap. Heck, it puts the R III to shame, with all the plastic bits on the R III ( the LED tailight is sharp ). The wheels are gorgeous! I wouldnt waste money on chrome ones, I like the polished metal look. The clear lenses are sharp. The stiching on the rear pillion slants in and meets with the stripes on the fender, subtle and neat.
The opportunity for aftermarket bits looks great. I would like to see it with black out engine casings in place of the chrome ( just to see how it would look ).
I wonder ( would be surprised if they didnt ) come out with a touring version.
In person, I think its a winner.

I test rode one yesterday in Portland. Now...it was onyl a 10 mile ride so my observations are limited but the first impression is ok. Power is there...no doubt! Theres more vibration than Id like while riding. I didnt feel it in the pegs more in the bars. Shifting from 1-2 was not happening smoothly at first but a few stoplights into it it was happening smoothly. Shifting down was a bit clunky but nothing to worry about. No issues with any other shifts. Handling is up in the air. Right now I can say I scraped pegs on the T-bird (my heels included) three times in 10 miles. We werent even going fast enough to warrant a good lean, just a couple right handers and a lefty. Anyone else experience this? Weight...yeah its heavier. Just takes a bit more effort to push through the corners. I dont feel it handles as well as my America though but this is only based on a 10 mile ride on a heavier bike. Maybe if I coud ride one for say an hour or two Id feel different about it. Its a good looking bike, seems to be built well but I dont know itll land in my stable. One last thing...Im really accustomed to my America tank not being so wide. But since it seems as though ALL bikes now have these wide at the bottom tanks its almost not worth mentioning. I guess one more...Soresn was right...to see the guages you have to look down and take your eyes off the road. Maybe not an issue but its still annoying. OK...one more...though the T bird is SOO much better looking in person the only part of it that screams Triumph is that big P-twin. Otherwise...

I saw the T'bird at the Dealer on Friday. If I were getting rid of my 2002 BA, I would get one. My BA has served me well for over 25,000 miles, looks good with its raked out longer front forks, and does 500 plus miles at 75 to 80 mph without killing me or complaining. I don't like the huge wide gas tank on the T'bird. So, my plans are to get a Rocket III to supplement my BA. I plan to use the Rocket III for longer trips, the BA for riding around town and medium length trips, and my Daytona 675 for having all out fun and excitement. Maybe the T'bird will make a good Chopper for me one day! Just my 2 cents

I too noticed the vibration. It seems to me the vibes are only noticeable in 1st and 2nd. After that I didn't think about it. I'm not sure at what RPM becuas as others mentioned, I could really read the gauges with my full face helmet on. The other thing I noticed was the seat hardness. MUCH harder than my solo stack Speedmaster.
Would I buy one? Absolutely! If I had the money and was ready to buy another bike. VERY torquey!

I got to ride it a couple more times over the last couple of days (Triumph demo truck in PDX). Still not excited about it, love, my speedy much more.
I talked to a lot of people that just loved the thing. The funny part is that almost all of them were either other brand riders or sport bike riders.

Got to ride the t-bird the other night, not for long, but long enough. The power is awesome. I'm 6'4" so the handlebars are way too low, and the pegs are further back than the america, which I didn't like either. Otherwise I liked it a lot (did I mention the power?) I can see putting some risers on there and more forward foot controls and it being a very nice ride. I won't be trading the BA in anytime soon though.

Good points re footpegs and risers. Gone with highway pegs and may put risers on in time. Nice power though eh!
