Ive been having trouble with the batt going dead while riding, starts fine runs fine shut it off wont start again. replaced the batt, checked all connections, new batt voltage checks out good when engine is off and rises 1-2 volts at 2000 rpms but when I switch to AC on the meter the voltage rises to over 20 volts. After reading about this in the tech vault Im leaning towards a bad rectifier reg. Is there any thing else Ishould check or another way to test?

You have to check the voltage in DC (direct current) mode. AC is for alternating current normally found in household circuits. If you have battery voltage and it climbs 1 to 2 volts at 2000 rpm, the alternator and regulator are ok.
Before you replaced the battery did you check the voltage? The no start condition might not have been battery related given the voltages you stated above.

I guess you could check AC output of a 3 phase alternator directly, before it is rectified. Typically AC output is converted to DC through the rectifier bridge which is a series of diodes (2 per phase). These might be build into the regulator, but I'm not sure. Never checked AC output on an alternator because you couldn't easily (sealed). DC is really all you need to check.

When i talked about the AC voltage this is the thread I was refering to I am familiar with electrics but have never troubleshot a charging system before Thanx for taking the time to help me . Today I got a better meter. and am hoping to retest tommaro and post the results. http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...true#Post283059

Never thought of using an AC voltmeter to pickup a bad diode but I guess it is possible. Not sure what to say about 20 volts showing on AC other than you could have a failed diode in the regulator. Is the regulator servicable, who knows? If the diodes are accessible, then yes. The fact that some charging is taking place shows that the regulator still works.

So I got a new meter and checked it again. not running 12.1 volts when started drops to 11.8 and stays right around there no matter what engine speed.

Before you do anything else, check your fuse panel. Fuse no 11 might be burnt. The regulator feeds the battery through that circuit. Check your other fuses while you are at it.

Assuming your alternator and grounds are ok, with no broken wires, the only thing left is the regulator/rectifier.
Any other comments, suggestions by others???

Have consulted wire diagram. checked continuity from the ground wire in the plug to bat. and frame, checks out good. checked cont from charging wire in plug to fuse 11, also good.

When you unplug the 3 wire alternator lead from the regulator, what are the resistance values? I imagine they should be insulated (ie not grounded). The only way you can check them is to measure from one lead to the other so you are measuring the resistance values of 2 of the 3 phases at a time. Should all be equal.

They arent. one pair =3.5 one pair = .30 the third =1.2. These readings with meter on (200uA) setting.

Is there a way that I can test for the 70 volts AC coming from the alternator?

Isn't 200uA an amperage setting for measuring small current flow? You should be on an "R" or Ohm setting? Probably getting false readings.

I checked this out too. thanks for the link in the other thread, by the way. this rec. only has four wires ours has 5 to accomidate three phase charging. and I knew the one that I ordered would at least bolt on and plug in even if it didnt work. This guy builds them in his garage and guarantees 'em. if I have trouble again I might take a closer look at them He does have on for three phase. http://www.oregonmotorcycleparts.com/FAQ.html

I guess I didn't even realize we have 5 wires instead of 4. The only time I ever looked at it was to upgrade the wire from the regulator to the battery for charging.
