I've been suffering from a possible igniter problem, but before I fork out for a new one I want to check the pickup coil gap.

However............ I've removed the footrests, all the bolts holding the alternator cover, but it won't move

I've tried tapping (gently and not so gently) with a rubber mallet, prising against the moulding marks, but it won't budge.

Are there any concealed bolts anywhere or do I need to resort to brute force and ignorance?

Thanks in advance

You'll have to give it a significant tap with the mallet on each of those four tabs to break the gasket seal and then it takes a stout tug to remove it as the alternator magnet is quite strong. I used a longish wooden dowel from the opposite side on the upper forward tab and a small dead blow mallet to loosen mine.

Thanks Edward,

I followed your advice, gave up with the rubber mallet and used a 2lb club hammer and a piece of 1" oak.

Came off like a dream - adjusted the gap (it was.85mm - so much for servicing by a dealer!!!!!)

and..................................IT LIVES !!!!

Cheers

Steve

See, it's easy with the assistance of the proper adjustment tools
