I just recently bought this bike for $500 (didn't run, wiring was shot)and started tearing her down and was wondering what the consensus was on reboring the cylinders. Took the head off and the pistons move smoothly in the cylinders (no side to side)but the tops are covered in carbon. I was originaly just going to clean everthing, install some new rings and call it good but with the look of the pistons I'm thinking of replacing them as well. If your for reboring what oversize? .020, .040, .060?

I wouldn't get that excited if there is no side to side movement and no scoring. I would just clean them up and use them. If you do decide to bore you just normally go to the whatever size it takes to clean up any imperfections or out of round issues. Again I wouldn't be that concerned about some carbon buildup. Clean it!

Measure them up and, if in spec, forget it. Just lightly hone the cylinders and replace the rings.

If you're going to take the pistons out anyway, mike the bores. Check out of round and taper.
If OK; hone, rings, ride

If it needs reboring, go with the minimum needed.

I would have replaced the wiring harness, changed the oil, new battery and gas. Then would have seen if it would run and went from there. That said call Mike Jones at Engle Motors.

another thing is to see what the piston is marked, if it is already 60 or more over look for used (or new) cyl. I know it is possible to go farther but I was never comfortable with it.

Like everyone else has said, if you can get away with a quick hone and re-ring that's what you do or of a bore is needed go the minimum you need.
