Just got a call from a guy I've played music with from time to time. The two of us just seem to click and what comes out of it is music beyond what I and he can do. I sometimes say, 1+1 don't equal 2... it equals something beyond the sum of the parts.
So after Toad Rock, he and I are committing a bunch of time together to further explore musical concepts we've been playing with. I am STOKED! Love where this is going and I think my music is about to get kicked up a notch!! Good feeling.
I am a musician... yes I play instruments, but I do music. Do... play... two different things. Music explains everything in a way that captivates the creator and the listener as one. They understand each other from a language without borders.
Music is art, language, interaction, exploration and experience all rolled up into a presentation of tantalizing sound bites. I was listening to the sound of my bike the other day against the sound of my buddy's riding beside me. I could hear the harmonics and the resonance resulting from the two combined and there is was... that musical pulse, that musical rhythm as the sound waves sliced through the air to make a new and totally different sound.
Music is like that... it comes from any sound source. From bikes to birds to crowds and crows. To listen is to hear a symphony without taking a step.
Thanks for letting me get a little abstract, as I do so very often in my world of music and life.
Live to love, love to live.

I love music, sadly, I can only appreciate good music but not participate. I don't have many regrets in life, but not being able to create music is definitely the top of that short list. Thank God for people who can!

I've also found that playing music is like sex It's sooo much better with other poeple. Nothing beats the feeling when all there is, is the sound of the song and the spot you're in it and nothing else matters.

Al, I feel the same way, but, have found some relief of late. I recommend you get yourself a harmonica. It's worked wonders for me since I grabbed my first one in November of last year. Nah, I ain't no musician - But I'm makin musical noise these days. I now own 4 of the things. There's lots of music on the internet. You don't have to read music - nearly all is available in tabular form. Mostly, I don't even use the stuff any more. The most enjoyment I get is tuning into the local NPR station on blues night and just trying to ape the music. Sometimes, when things click and the mouth and ears are working together, I'm actually making sounds that blend with the music being played. I strongly recommend one of these babies for anyone who wished they could and haven't.

I screwed up and sold my Ibanez and Line 6 "spider III" amplifier....Im sorely missing them now...It's true, you thirst for it after a short while...I played the older stuff down in my garage...mostly power and barr chords...Anything from Boston's first album, through "Walk-On"...Ozzy's "Blizzard of Oz" was a HUGE influence...Randy Rhoads, Tom Scholz, Neil Schon, Brian May, Gary Moore, Joe Satriani, were all the sounds coming from my Garage before the case of the "stupids" sat in....Will get another set up before long....

No need to play yourself when theres music like this. Okey, I do appreciate people who know how to play an instrument...I´m not one of them/you. Sorry

There's ALWAYS a reason to make music. Playing music with talented musicians can be a lot like riding a bike. It's a feeling you can't REALLY explain to someone who hasn't done it. They both require you to be completely focused in the moment while letting you 'let go' of everything else.... and when you're done with a really good jam (or a really good ride), you (or at least I) have a 'spent' feeling of euphoric satisfaction that you just can't get anywhere else... Conversely, a BAD ride is like playing with bad musicians... it leaves you asking yourself "why did I even leave the house?".
But all this is more or less meaningless... As Frank Zappa told us:

I used to play the Bass guitar, loved it. Never managed to get any further than the rehearsal rooms, but had a blast all the same. Every now and again i get the old tapes out that we recorded while we jammed. I think there are a couple of strong numbers amongst them. Not sure who else would agree though.
Often think back to those days, when we dreamed of "making It" what ever that means.

I've mentioned the marching drum band I was in. We did gigs of all kinds, from village fetes to festivals and stuff for telly. The band even played at the new Wembley before most footy teams, although I didn't play personally. Any gig was good but the best were those where the crowd were up for it. The youtube video I linked to in another post was a Saturday midnight in Liverpool city centre. People mention 'zones' all the time but it's only when you get in one you realise what is meant by the term. You encounter them when out riding sometime; when you get a series of corners right, or when just riding along, enjoying being on 2 wheels. I may be about to commit blasphemy here but I never got anywhere close on a bike (or anything else, for that matter) than that gig. I'd be in the zone, concentrating on the rhythm and then snap out for a short time to observe the crowd, who were going nuts. The euphoria I felt was something I'll never forget and something I can't describe with mere words.
I also play bass guitar with a locally-run 'project' but it's only roots 'n' 5ths-I'm not too good!!

Toad Rock was fantastic but that's another story (or possibly thread) and after I got back as planned me and my friend Josh dove into the studio. We worked on a groove with a 5/4 time sig. and I gotta tell you it was not only fun but AMAZING! (For an example of 5/4 time think of the Theme song for "Mission Impossible.") Did anyone ever see the movie "Once?" It had a 5/4 song in it but... anyway. We worked on this groove and it seems to have the effect of adding huge smiles to our faces as we went deeper and deeper in the whole affair. A good time... a time of musical expansion. I loved it...!
Thanks to everyone for you stories and comments. This is a topic deeply important to me and to hear your thoughts means a lot.
Btw... Barry's idea of picking up the harmonica is a really good one. They are very portable, nice to hold and a pleasure to blow. If you really wanna get some good instruction check out this guy...
Super good harmonica instruction.
Live to love, love to live.
