I wonder if you could either wrap the rubber or replace it all together with leather. Would that help?

I used to tie wrap an old black sock onto the shifter when I got paid to worry about shine.

You're right there John... ain't that just the cat's meow! Who woulda thunk. My Triumph boots include leather reinforcement over the part that contacts the shifter which is cool. But those boot protectors are a fantastic idea.

Cut, drill, tap, and screw a harley part. I know they make all metal ones.

Or you could remove the rubber and grind down the "rubber holding part" of the lever.

Here's what I use:

The skinnier one fits well if you just carve a little bit of the rubber out of the inside.

go spend $3.99 at CVS and buy a box of finger cots
roll one over the shifter rubber. When you wear it out... roll on another.

All-metal shifter covers are made for BMW's although you may have to shave some rubber to make it fit. Try A and S @ http://www.ascycles.com/SearchResult_k100rs.aspx?&KeyWords=kwK100RS%20kwAllBikes&Any=True
