Everyone keeps forgetting poor old Ed. Is that because he was old? The only one to lead a "full life?"

Maybe it's because he was the only one to lead a full life (and then some). Or maybe it's because some are still waiting for him to knock on the door with a huge check.

People identify with celebrities, for better or worse.

In our society, death is something that we have come to know secondhand. It used to be that death occurred at home, with family.

Now it's institutionalized and we are usually isolated from the actual death of loved ones. As such we have come to deny death as the natural conclusion of life.

Our culture has become one of life worship. In no small part due to the huge amount of money to be made by prolonging life well beyond any chance of recovery. Just so the families can avoid facing the inevitable for a few more days, or weeks.

Perhaps whenever someone of note (or notoriety) dies it reminds some of their own mortality.
Or perhaps it makes a connection. Death is the great equalizer, regardless of status we all get there. No one can buy his/her way out.

Deaths of famous people are also markers in our lives. For most (if not all) of my generation the question "where were you when JFK was assassinated?" is a biggy, I think the vast majority remember.

So all celebrities have their fans; that's what makes them celebrities. So for some "where were you when Farah/Michael Jackson/Ed McMahon, even Billy Mays died?" may well be markers in their lives.

Or maybe they're just bored......................where's my tequila?

Well Bill, by examining some basic sociological truisms inherent in the human condition, I personally think you somewhat succeeded in answering Mark's question above.

HOWEVER....five'll getcha ten you probably put our Brooklyn-based yute back there to sleep with that answer o' yours there, ol' buddy!!!

(I mean, you know how it is...the kids always ask those kinds o' questions, but they really don't want an answer to any of 'em....ain't that right Mark???!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Yeah...you got that right...but the whole death being an equalizer thing does make sense...especially in the case of Michael Jackson. But Billy Mays...c'mon...if any one of you losers give a crap about him...I'd suggest you take your own life and do humankind a huge favor.

But ultimately, I still don't give a flying ****** about anyone dead unless their either a good friend or close family member.

All good points, but my vote's with BORED! Same thing with all the reality shows. Are our own lives that unfulfilled? Why should we care how others live (spectacular, bloody death being one exception)?

BORED???? Maybe your bored. I'm not. I have more going on in my life than I care to have. I don't have time to scratch my own rear most of the day anymore.

IMO, I believe people like to gossip. It's a part of human nature..."Hey, did you hear that________?"

I'm not sure if it's true but I heard Vince was in trouble with the law. I don't know but he could be in the big house.

Any one else heard this?

I'll watch the infomercials for comic relief. Proud to say that I've never bought anything - but I will admit to strolling through the "As seen on TV" aisle at the local Walgreens Drug.

Now the $64,000 question; How many camera "takes" did it take for the ShamWow guy to toss that food chopper over his shoulder and into the sink? Swiisssshhhhhh/Clunk.

Six, actually. Gale Storm died yesterday as well at age 87. She was a sitcom pioneer in the fifties.

I always thought Billy owed his career due to a slight resemblence to the Al Borland character from Tool Time.

Maybe a little, but Al's voice wasn't near as annoying.

is that where the inspiration for "What ain't to be, just might happen" came from? inspiration being the queen of Sevierville and her parallel twins?

I disagree. One of the "traditions" in the so-called "legitimate" mainstream media that drives me crazy is the postmortem celebrity comic. They either A) are so tacky you want to vomit, or B) practically write themselves and exhibit no imagination or wit what-so-ever. I'd put the one above in the latter category. Pretty sad.

Wow! Soooooo I guess we're talkin' that "low hangin' fruit" thing again, huh John?! I guess I'm just too easy to please lately then, huh?!

Well, there ya have it folks...I guess retirement DOES soften the ol' brain after all!!!

And so, I guess the moral of all this must be: Keep toilin' away at those jobs out there fellas, or else YOUR BRAIN will become as soft as MINE!!!!

(oh...and as soft as that "low hangin' fruit" that never gets picked too!)
