Hiall, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions from experience of what is a quality cold weather glove.
I have been on the look out for some but if I am going to pay some serious money, I really want to know they are going to last the journey.
I've just found out the cheapies I bought are now falling apart after getting caught in the rain for 2 hours, so I don't want to wast any more money.
Any suggestions much appreciated
cheers staffo

Check out Ganka.ca. They make a glove that I use called the 60-135-AQ (huh!?). Yeah... that's the model or whatever but they look like this. They are made of deerskin and lined with Thinsulate. If you order online order big... they fit small.

I've been using a pair of Joe Rocket cold weather gauntlets since 2004. They're looking a bit tattered, and they're really only rated for mildly cold temps, not bitter cold, but they've never leaked once. And with a pair of glove liners for the colder temps I haven't needed to buy different gloves. Last year I wore them with the liners over Monida pass in the 30's and snowing.

Either get snowmobile gloves or go electric if your going to ride in really cold weather. Electric are a pain in the a$$, with the wires, but you can't beat them.

I wear a pair of mittens from these folks: Mountain Hard WearNot M/C stuff but mountain climbing gear, A guy at my local REI who is also a year round commuter recommended them to me. Cold and windy is cold and windy. They have wind stop fabric laid cross ways in two layers, never feel a thing.

Another alternative is to get some "over mittens" to wear over your winter gloves. These keep the wind/rain/snow off of your gloves to start with. Aerostich has 2 kinds, for $47 & $57. http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Rain-Glove-Covers-p-1-c-443.htmlI got the thinner kind, so they roll up small, to keep in saddle bags. The heavier ones will probably be very bulky, but probably much warmer also. The weather here in Alabama is not very extreme, usually not less than 30 deg F in the daytime in the winter. --Tom

thanks guys, they are all great suggestions. For the record, I already have summer gloves and just need a pair of winter ones as well. Also for some reason I'm not a real fan of wearing inner gloves and I did look into electric ones too but they appeard would be a nuisance trying to put them on. They all sound like a good ideas but for me I would just prefer a good pair of winter gloves that hopefully stayed dry when it rained.
So I'm now going to pm mountain man about his suggestion cos those deer skin gloves look pretty good for the money.
Thanks again.

I'm pretty much a fair weather rider these days at least when it comes to commuting. I'm a huge wuss. But if I take another long early or end-of-season trip again, I'll get the Gerbing gloves to attach to my Gerbing jacket liner.

There are plenty of articles and ratings out there. Without electric, there is not much that can help in very cold weather. The price range is pretty wide and may not correlate to warmth. I have a pair of Cortek (basically same as Tourmaster Polar. They work fairly well. Some also recommend the HippoHands to keep the wind off your gloves which impact the chill factor significantly. Good luck.

A glove I like is made by Manzella. I think they say they are mountain climber gloves, really warm, waterproof shell and the palm grips the handgrips nicely. I have worn mine through 2 winters with no problems. I ride about 30 miles to work, at about 30degrees f., my hands are just a bit chilly when I arrive. not bad at all, I think.

those scarab gloves look good too. I ended up buying some pretty good gloves off ebay for $40AUD. Well the were just a little bit small but fine all in all. Anyway, I had to endure about 300km of heavy rain and these gloves did alright but weren't waterproof or anything. So near the end of the day, I noticed some fraying at the knuckles and turns out much of the stitching in one of the hand is coming apart. Eventually, they will just fall apart so not real happy about that. thanks anyway for all your replies guys

Get the wool-lined Elk-Skin Gauntlets from Aerostitch RW: Insulated Elk Skin Gauntlet I hate to give up on my Triumph Highway Gloves for milder Winter season riding, but these insulated gauntlets sure make me want a pair of the non-insulated gloves. I have worn the insulated gloves in a lot warmer temps than what I purchased them for, and they were very comfortable (not too hot to wear) even at temps near 70 degrees. What I'm trying to say is, that these are a very fine, well-made glove that you can feel good about getting what you paid for. Generous gauntlet easily covers any jacket sleeve with ease. Wool works, wet or dry. Anything thing better would have to be electric.

Ibex makes some great dextrous gloves made of merino wool with a water/wind proof outer shell. Use them down to 30 degrees without a windshield.

I haven't found anything that keeps my hands warmer than these when temps dip below 40*F http://www.kitterytradingpost.com/product.php/pid/108/sid/983/prodid/17781 Well made and reasonably priced. Order a size larger than you would in a glove.

Anyone know of someone that makes custom gloves. I have long figures and have tried mens gloves. I have found them to have to much fabric in the palm and not enough fabric for the space between the thumb and first figure. Or does any one know much about the aftermarket kits for heated gribs?
