I came home today to find my road closed and police tape up and cruisers with lights going all over. I freaked at first since it look like my house may have been on fire with the fire engines out front.Turns out some woman was on her cell phone in an suv and wandered off the road and killed a guy doing lawn work. Senseless.

Is this a "cell phone rant" thread, or a " I hate mowing the grass rant" thread. Either one, I'm with ya!

It's just... so, so frustrating... this cell phone-driver thing. I really feel for you (musta freaked you out), the family of that worker and everyone else effected.

Cell phones/driving is bad news... we know that. I recently went to the big city to attend my daughter's graduation. Her husband offered to drive me around knowing I am a basketcase in city traffic. The whole time he drove me around he was on his cell and it really bothered me.

Cell phones are part of today's culture. And today's culture redefines itself at an alarming rate, so unless you are part of the emerging generation... GOOD LUCK! Cell phone are here for now, but we really need to change the way we use them. As a rider I Cringe when I approach a cager turning left with a cell phone in hand.

My heart goes out to loved ones of the one who died. And... my heart goes out to the cell phone user... that woman has to live with the memory the rest of her life.

GET OFF THE PHONE!!

Live to love, love to live.

Glad I do most of my mowing on a 7,000 pound John Deere!

Saw an idiot on the phone in a Lamborghini drift under a truck on US 40 once. When he hung up and realized where he was, he panicked and ended up driving off through a cornfield.

I hate those FORKING THINGS! I nearly put my boot through a teenage driver’s door when she wandered into my lane. As she began to wander, and while I was passing, I noted she had both hands off the wheel and appeared to be texting! I don’t get angry at most things in life, but this takes the cake. In fact, now that I say that I’m forced to recall another incident involving a cell phone, while riding on a military base.

I was cut off by a Navy Lieutenant Commander, who inadvertently ignored a stop sign while on his cell phone, (a big no-no on military installations) and ran me into the grass at 35mph. I followed him and gave him a piece of my mind, while extending all military courtesies…”excuse me, sir, with all due respect…YOU NEARLY F-ing”…you get the picture.

Hang up and drive!!!

There should be a law to outlaw mowing the lawn, it's too dangerous.

I will 3rd that one, haven't cut mine yet this year. My smaller pitbull gets lost in my yard right now.I have either been working, on vacation, or it was raining.

Seriously, it looks like I may know the guy. There is another small towing / repair shop up the road from me about an 1/8 mile give or take and the guys name is Bob. Someone posted rest in peace Bob. He was a decent guy and a fellow biker. The paper didn't say much yet.

story here.

Oh and this is not so much a cell phone or yard work rant as another SUV driving idiot not paying attention rant. Way too many of those critters here. When I first found out what happened I thought it was going to be one of those idiot city kids that moved here and think they own the road. These kids walk down the middle of the road 3 and 4 abreast and see you coming but will not move even if another car is coming the other way.

I just got an update, one of my daughters friends fathers was at the scene just after it happened and it was the man I know.I wasn't close friends with him or anything but I had done business with him and was friendly with him to a certain extent.

This is just a perfect example of the fact that some people shouldn't drive. Irregardless of what they were doing in thier vehicle, they weren't driving! They are basically careless, reckless idiots.
How many of us have, while driving done a secondary thing? Lit a cig, took a drink, picked up an item to hand to a passenger, checked on a child or pet. Glanced at a map or GPS. Picked your nose or scratched your groin???????
They can't consintrate well enough to drive safely!!
Anyone (in your wayward youth) drink, smoke, toke, grope a date and drive at the same time----with out killing yourself or anyone else??? I think alot of people today just shouldn't be on the road PERIOD.

After I posted that I thought, "waitagoddamnedsecond, he's using a computer, ain't he?" Not only do I have a cell phone, I no longer have a land line at home. If I could have a land line at home for $10 or less per month for local service only, I would've kept it. But it's nearly $30 a month. Screw that.

Have you heard of this 'magic jack' thing. It's home phone service for like 19.95 per YEAR. Haven't tried it and don't know anyone who has it yet but it's all over the TV lately.

I think this story is just an illustration of a collection of things that make it more and more dangerous to be on a bike (or apparently, mowing the lawn)..

The first is people increasingly finding things to distract them from driving. Your car is NOT a phone booth, a movie theater, a restaurant, a hair salon, a bathroom, a coffee shop, or a reading room. Sure, MOST of us are able to take a sip of our coffee or nibble on a bag of chips while driving. But the last time I was almost run down on my bicycle, the driver had to take BOTH his hands off his cheeseburger to grab the wheel and swerve. As he passed me, the look of panic on his face was punctuated by the cheeseburger hanging out of his mouth like a giant beige/brown tongue. As far as cell phones, there a VERY few reasons to take a call in the car. With voicemail, there are almost NONE (if your wife is in her 9th month and ready to pop, that's a reasonable excuse... otherwise, let it go to voicemail).

The other problem is that with everyone driving MUCH more car than they need, there is what I call a sense of 'detachment from the road'. As everyone here knows, if you are the most vulnerable vehicle on the road, you notice EVERYTHING. Is that guy in the turn lane going to cut in front of me? Is that dog in the un-fenced yard going to run in front of me or chase me? etc... On the other side of that, if you are 5 feet above traffic in a sound proof chamber, you notice MUCH less. I'm not saying everyone should drive a Smartcar or a Mini. You need what you need. If you have a farm or even acres of land to maintain, you may need an F350. If you spend your weekends 4-wheeling through waist-deep mud, a Hummer might be the best choice for you... If on the other hand, you've got a hummer that's never seen dirt (and probably never will), you should probably find another way to compensate for your feelings of inadequacy.

When you couple these things together and have a soccer mom driving a giant sound-proof tank and talking on the phone while applying make-up... That's more dangerous than a drunk driver, and a MUCH more frequent sight on the road.

I love guys like you cause you make me look like I'm "with it" . I'm no fan of cell phones either, but I now have one all the time because one of my jobs demands it. But I call when I NEED to, not just to jabber away, and I pull over when it rings! No cable here either. What's the use of having 100 crappy stations with banal, juvinile content? Having said that, I do have plain ole T.V. atenae reception, and now I'm thinking about starting a rant about the new "improved" digital signal.....only I just started a rant about fridges. Is there a limit on how cranky one can be on here?

Yeah,I agree but in good ole Texas with our buddy-buddy governor and his good friends in the telecommunications industry, they have combined to kill a bill to control cell phone use for the third straight legislative session. These big companies and the legislators really don't care if people get killed as long as they get their money. Pi$$es me off to no end.

Just had an idea. Doesn't happen too often.
Insurance companies could give discounts on vehicles with hard wired cel phone jammers.
We got along fine before we had the ability to talk and drive at the same time. Have to do something different in states where insurance follows the driver instead of vehicle.

That is a shame. I really feel for this man's family.

While not illegal in Florida, I find more and more problems with cell users. I have on 3 occassions in the last month, cussed out teen girls that are texting! I just can't #@$%@#$% believe they think this is acceptable! I pull up beside them and let it rip!
I'm waiting to get reported for 'road rage', but I don't care. If a LEO with half a brain doesn't side with me, I'll have my day in court to explain.

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

Ah come on, Dick. I'm "sure" there wasn't any deals made down there between your governor and legislature, and the telecommunications industry! Noooooo!!!

I'd bet it's more the idea that those good ole boys down there just didn't think that any government had any right to tell folks that they can't do two things at once while they're drivin' themselves around! Yeah, THAT'S IT alright!!!

I mean, geeeee, isn't that the very thing that I keep readin' that folks around here are tired of??? That bad ol' government tellin' folks what they can do and what they can not do???

(well, at least I'll bet that THAT'S the argument the afforementioned telecommunication industry down there told the governor and those legislators o' yours as they wrote those big fat checks to each of their respective re-election campaigns anyway, HUH?!)

Oh, and BTW Dick! I forgot to tell ya one more thing here....

Even though THIS brankrupt state over here on the west coast passed a hands-free only cell phone law that went into effect this past January 1st, I STILL spot moron after moron on a daily basis with those d*mn things pressed up to their friggin' ears as I'm ridin' around. So "maybe" all this "There ought to be a law" attitude doesn't work anyway, RIGHT???!!!

On the news tonight, Virginia has just passed a bill making it illegal (as a secondary offense)to text while driving. Not far enough, but it is progress.

Missouri tried that, and sadly only came up with still allowing adults to text and drive, make sense to you?

Im wondering how many of you guys, talk on your cell while riding? I was at the rt 66 motorcycle in Springfield and there was a guy getting his cell set up to use with his helmet, cause he has business to do while riding. Now tell me where is that smart with all the other tings we have to watch out for, I really dont want to be distracted by my cell ringing in my ear while I am riding in traffic.

Recently in Missoula, MT, the city council tried to ban all electronic device use in vehicles. The mayor vetoed the ban on hands-free units. Not sure how I feel about that (the ban or the veto).

Just out of curiosity -- how is it we're sure she was using a cell phone at the time of the accident?

One would think the media would be all over that fact if any first responders were making that info public.

Just wondering...

Aside from any and all cellphone related opinions, personal usage or etiquette this accident was/is tragic. It caused deep pain and suffering for some and much trauma and angst for others. My thoughts go out to everyone effected by this event. You too Ian... it makes you think doesn't it? May you all find comfort during this difficult time.

Using a mobile (cellphone) while driving has been illegal in Oz for several years - handsfree is legal. It hasn't really done anything to deter the idiots. You still see at least 1 in 50 drivers on the phone (a very conservative estimate). I wish the jammers were legal here.

My 'other' peeve is drivers with insecure loads. I ride past a city dump every day and there is ALWAYS junk on the road that's fallen from trailers and trucks. The morons don't realize that their carelessness can easily kill. I'd kill too but it would be intentional.

Cheers, Richard

i think i read somewhere that philly has the law that bans cellphones in cars, on bicycles, and even rollerblades...haha It might be a little excessive, but if they could ban people from walking and texting I'd support it.

You might want to explain how the ACLU's continued opposition to proposed cell phone legislation in Texas fits in with your conspiracy theory.

I have dealt with the Texas legislature extensively and used to work in the telecommunication industry. If you don't think lobbyists working for special interest groups-like the ACLU, telecommunication industry etc-you are naive. It's not just Texas but lobbyist in every branch of government that pass the funds to the people who make the votes.
