I was thinking of converting my front speedy mag wheel to a spoked one, and was wondering if anyone knows of a spoked wheel with a dual front disk that would work. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

Yeah Bob, a few folks around here have been able to find those hen's teeth...err, I mean, those Triumph Thunderbird Sport wheels and have mounted 'em up to their Bonnie Americas alright. However, I feel if you could even find one, and then also the right fork-leg off a Speedmaster with the requisite bracket to hold the second caliper, and THEN havin' the whole shebang laced up to your stock rim...well...I think if you consider the cost of all that as compared to just doing what our Swedish brother Bengt(piper) did, which was to just bolt an aftermarket 6 pot caliper to his BA here....

http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...rt=all&vc=1

...well, I think you'd find that to be a heck of a lot more cost-effective in the long run. That of course is unless you're wanting to do this more for the look of twin-discs and not just for more braking power.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I gots me one. The new floating rotors showed up this week and will hopefully be going on tomorrow. Then the caliper and crossover hose, bleed the brakes and I'm off (as soon as it stops raining... grrrrr...).

Doing it over again, I'd probably just do the 6-pot caliper. Less money and probably equivalent performance. If the 6-pot caliper and single disc is better than my dual floating discs and sintered pads, I might just cry. It's been a long road getting this conversion done.

P.S. the black Speedmaster front fender I put on last weekend looks TIGHT with my blacked out front end and fork gators. Bobberville, here I come.

I don't think you really gain any stopping power with the dual disc. I ride both, Wendy has a BA and I a SM and the stopping power is the same. You can easily lock either front wheel so you can't gain any stopping power since once you lock a wheel you actually lose stopping power as well as control. Where the dual disc gives you an advantage is in very hard braking conditions, they won't get as hot and won't fade since the stopping pressure is divided between the 2 disc and thus stay cooler under those conditions.

Having done the same mod as FJ I'd have to agree - there's no real noticeable difference in braking performance under normal circumstances and since I haven't had an emergency situation since I've done it I can't report on that either. Is it worth all the effort and cost for the difference in braking? No. Does it look cool? Heck yes.

I'm of the same opinion on this one. Not that I have experience with both to make practical comparisons... just logic. If ya can lock up one or the other that's where braking stops and trouble begins.

Ya know Sandman, there is one situation where you may have gained something. If I remember you tow a trailer, under thos conditions the dual disc probably helps to keep them cool so you don't experience brake fade.

Well there you go. If you plan on racing your bike, go with dual discs.

I just dual disked both of mine to annoy people on here.....

But cos no one else really did.

Ok the 03 was slightly different, she had a front end write off, a set forks graciously given by a bloke from the same State as the man who caused the write off (spooky huh?) were of a Speedie, and a wheel came up at the right time. Would have been daft not to.

The fork leg bit out of the kit...... is on Sandmann's bike.

The spokes are hard enough to clean when only one side is blocked. I've never had a problem with not having enough front brake in 17000 miles.

Bob, I too wanted a spoked wheel up front on my speedie so I went and brought a brand new one, that 2nd hand one would just never turn up, was very expensive but what the h3ll...
Luckily us speedie riders don't have to get a fork leg, caliper, rotor and brake cylinder like America owners do...
Cause I wanted a beefy front tyre I left it at 17" and mounted a 140x80x17" tyre...
Happy hunting if you decide to try and get one...

Yeah that was the motivation behind me doing it in the first place. Of course, the trailer is out of rego and hasn't been used in two years, so who knows if/when I'll get to try it out now.

Thanks for the pic Mike. That wheel looks great. I think I'll go the new route when I have the extra bucks.

What are the specifics on the TBS wheel? ie. year model etc. I got that its a 17" which gets my interest. After I wrecked my bike back in march, I got some speedy forks for my TBA. Decided to change to speedy wheels (reluctantly). Got my parts used from pinwall. Salvage front wheels are rare as hen's teeth.

seen once on e bay, gone for 25 pounds but my point is why you lot need 2 discs? if you maintain properly your front caliper (clean it from time to time lubricate moving parts, checking pads thikness)it works perfectly and will stop you when you want and where you want

Why have you done what you've done to your bike...?

The answer is - because we can.

Any model, as long as it's the Thunderbird SPORT, not the regular Thunderbird. The regular one has a spoked, single disk, 18" wheel on it (aka a standard America wheel).

FYI the TBS rim came in two flavours.. steel and alloy. If you find an alloy one, pinch the hub for yourself and sell the rim to a TBS owner - they're hens teeth.

ooohhhh never knew that...

both the TBS wheels came with alloy rims. the first one I did a deal with the bloke who re-laced it... the second one I still have....

Yeah, I have my 17" alloy rim sitting in the garage. I still need to put it on ebay.

I,v been running a twin disc on my 02 America for about 6 1/2 years I got a Triumph Tiger hub (before the mag wheel model) and laced it to a 19" rim (fills the front guard nicely) I kept the narrow rim which I like. twin full floater discs,(specially made) with P&M calipers, and braided lines, I love the balanced look of the twin setup. After market pullbacks and switchgear along with a hand made dash /mini speedo&taco made it different enough and 'mine'. Then a girl cleaned me up so another build is under way (I am still trying to put some photo's with this but can't master that yet, I'll get one of the grand kids to help in the next day or so)

Dual disc Brembo with braided stainless lines would work well.

I have two shiny new EBC floaters ready to go on my wheel. Probably after the Kootenay Raid, now. Leary of making any major changes before a big trip. I'll have to survive British Columbia with one EBC floater.

I wonder if the wheel and rotors off an older spoked wheel Tiger would fit our bikes?

Thanks Matt for the info. Your bike looks great with that fat 17" tyre on front and that bobber stying. Bike Bandit listed the TBS front wheel but the picture was the same as the regular TB. Part number different. I've already ordered a SM front wheel from bbandit and will go with that for now. Like the idea of tubeless rims. Got a used SM rear wheel from pinwall that I've polised up. I'm gonna post pics and a history in due time.
