I know we've talked about iso-grips before, but I'm thinking it's about time to loose the stock grips on my girl. I'm thinking I'll get them from Brent.
Do you guys like these? Think I should get the throttle boss? I'm thinking no lights for now-just becuase of money-they do look cool tho!
And are there instructions to removing and replacing the grips-especially the throttle side?
Thanks in advance-Brett

It's not that hard of a job and there should be instructions that come with the grips. By the way, iso grips are a lot more girthy than the stock grips and shoul feel way better in your hands. I'm pretty sure they are also longer too. Makes a definite improvement to the appearance in my opinion as well.
Their are some tricks to removing those old grips without many issues. Member Nomad posted this brilliant idea for removing grips:
Easiest way with no damage to the grips should you ever want to use them again. Remove the bar end weights, work a thin bladed flat screwdriver between the inner edge of the grip and the bar, spray WD 40 through the plastic straw that comes attached to the can into the gap alongside the screwdriver blade. Work the blade around the inner side of the grip and the WD 40 will disolve the grip glue and enable you to slide it off the bar in one undamaged piece.
I ended up cutting mine one of mine off with a razor blade b/c I didn't know of this trick before changing mine.

Get the grips - definite improvement over stock . Go ahead and get the Throttle Boss , it's a nice accessory for the money . Adjust it so your palm heel rests on it at about 3/4 throttle .

I have the grips, throttle boss, and lights. Great set up, wish I'd done it before. Bear in mind when you put the lights on the throttle boss, the bolts supplied are too short, and you will need to source some others elsewhere. I like the grips because they are nice and chunky, reduce vibration and look great. The throttle boss is just brilliant - it was sent in error instead of the lights, but I'm very glad I had it as well - so comfortable for long journeys. The lights are great, much safer and look different. The 'death grip' glue you get with the grips did not look enough, but if you put it in hot water before opening it it goes further. I attached mine to extend the bars by about and inch and a half each side, and moved the control up tight to them, making the bars quite a lot wider, and I love to riding position now.
It's all good....

A word of caution with the kury iso grips... I had them (and the throttle boss) and loved them, until the tag that holds one of the throttle cables snapped on the side of a highway and I had to replace them with the stockers again. The tags on that plastic sleeve aren't all that strong - it might be an idea to carry your stock throttle side grip in a saddlebag.

Hmmm, that's interesting Sandman. Has anybody else had that happen to them too? Even that aside I still like them. Maybe I should just save up and get the lights too. If I'm gonna do it, might as well do it right.

Thats what I did to get mine off (I also had Karen do that to hers when she got her ISOs). Silly me, thought I might want to get the OEM back on some day HA!NO!
Youll love the ISOs. Throttle boss is nice also.
The only issue I ran into was the grip glue "wore out" and my left grip wasnt secure. I tempd it with superglue BUT that only lasted a short time. I now have Gorilla glue and will give that a go. This happened on both Karens and my bike.
Still....one of the best add ons you can do!
I have been told by a very reliable source that all the cool kids in town have ISO Grips!

Oohhhh yes...I wanna be one of the cool kids!!! Think I should just skip the glue that comes with it and go right for the gorilla glue?

About the cool bar-end LED's - is it a straight shot down the tubes or do you hafta drill all the way through the weights to run the wires ? Was wonderin'.

The end weights have holes in already. The wires go through them, and drill a small hole in the bars where the controls are so they are completely hidden, then splice them into the existing cables. This way they are totally hidden from view. The PITA bit is fishing the wires through the holes you've drilled. I did it with a loop of fishing line through the hole, then feeding the wires down the bars and hooking them with the line. Fiddly but do-able.
You know you want some!!

I guess I'm the odd one here. Had the ISOs with the throttle boss for about 18 months. Okay for short trips <200 miles but after 400 miles the black knobs were like holding onto rocks. And I was wearing gloves. I ditched them and went with the Gran Tourismo knock-offs. $10 ebay. Man these things are comfy, sticky and NO vibration. I'll not be using the Kurys again. http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/jC1WetoudHYXPVgNoSG9gg?feat=directlink

My iso's tab for the throttle cable broke the 1st season I had them. I ended up turning my idle all the way up and limped along in 1st gear about 5 miles. I stopped at a yamaha shop and they gave me a used one off a warrior. I replaced them with more iso's because they match my pegs. No problem so far with the new one. I think i'd pack a spare of some sort if I planned a long trip tho

I have had the iso's with the throttle boss for a couple of years, no problem very comfortable.
one thing that I did do at install that might have prevented some of the thottle tab breakage mentioned previously - it seemed that the iso sleeve was too loose, so I wraped some .020 inch thick plastic shim stock around the bar to make the fit better (once around, no overlap), this removes the side load on the throttle flange and tabs. pretty easy to do and cheap. the thickness of material might vary slightly at application.

Roadworthy had his break on the way to the midwest rally, he ended up putting some kawasaki grips on there. If you search, there was a thread with a bunch of guys that had theirs break. Knock on wood, I've been lucky so far with mine.

most likely user error, he didnt re-jet the grips to match. ...

Dangit! I knew I must have done something wrong! I would suggest putting them on the stock throttle sleeve instead of the Kuryakyn one piece throttle replacement.

Hairspray (believe it or not) makes an excellent adhesive for glueing grips to bars.

I also liked my Kury grips and I am also among those left stranded on the side of the road because of them. No user error or instalation error was involved.

Interesting grips Midlifecrisis . Which ones did you get (for Harley?) and were they a direct fit.

I put iso grips on my Honda and I'm getting them for my America. But the supplied glue gave out on the honda,I superglued them and have had no further trouble.I'll go straight to the superglue for the triumph's set.

See my other post from a few months back. Any of the grips for "Honda 1-inch" fits America/Speedy. The good thing about these is that they use the OEM throttle sleeve.
They are "almost" a direct fit (minor mod on throttle side), you remove the left side and just slip on the grip, just like the ISO's.
On the throttle side, you only remove the rubber grip, (not the sleeve), by cutting off the rubber part of the grip. This is done while the assembly is still installed (no fiddling around with the throttle cables.
The sleeve will have raised ribs. These ribs will have to be cut off using a Stanley Knife or a Dremel tool. You then just add some glue and slip the new grip over the throttle sleeve. If you ever want to go back to stock, you will need to buy a new throttle sleeve (around $10.00) Plus the rubber grip.

There's the kuryakin iso grip for the Triumphs, and kury also make a "universal" iso grip. That one fits over the standard throttle sleeve.Would this work with our bikes?Maybe the stanley knife/dremel would be needed?
