My GF has a Boxster she bought new in 2004. The FIRST DAY, she lost one of the two keys to the car, so I figured it would be a prudent idea to get a spare key after all this time. So, I stopped into the local dealer in Dallas over lunch yesterday to get one.

Are you ready?

$319.00 plus tax for the stinkin' key!

But wait! Ya gotta get it programmed.

Another $100.00 plus tax.

Incredible!!!!

I told the counter lady that I thought that was a bit high. Her response? "Well, these aren't cheap cars, you know."

Well, DUH!!!!

(I didn't get one. We'll just have to be careful with the one she has.)

My brother has a car similar. It's not your typical Ace Hardware grind and find key. CNC machining program required for every key. Still to clamp a key into the CNC, and press run on the program isn't that intuitive.

At that price I'd say tie it to her nipple ring.

Not that I know she's got one or not.

Ahhh! The joys of owning a German import. Back in the early 90's, I had to replace the solenoid on my 944. Wholesale was $98.00. At the time, a typical GM solenoid was $25.00 or less.

Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

ebay for one or buy one online from a dealer. Either way should be much cheaper than paying a dealer a lump sum to purchase then program. Search web forums on how to program one. Really straight forward.

Keys have transponders.

The remote portion is around $130., I would expect $50-60 for programming (depending on the dealer or indy).

+1--I purchased a remote from Suncoast for $130 and had my indy shop program it for $50. $180 total versus the $550 my Porsche stealer quoted me

A slide hammer with a self tapping screw welded on the end will remove the original switch well enough. Then you drill a hole in the dash and mount a $3.50 autoparts store switch where it belongs.

Wow John! And here the irony of this whole thing here is that just yesterday I went to my local Ace Hardware for a new garden hose end, and while I was there I had another key made for my 550 Spyder, and it ONLY cost me a buck and a half!!!

(yep...and the guy even threw in a free little keyring TOO, dude!!!)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

My brother's Jeep has a chip key too.
While refinishing the floor of an Ace Hardware I found out they do "chipkeys" for about $100. Check it out.

I think there is a class action suit against VW right now for the same thing, it's that they don't allow anyone else to make or program the keys so they can charge ridiculous prices for them. They know they are screwing you, they just don't care.

It is painful. I just went to get another key for my Audi TT a couple months ago and nearly crapped my pants when the parts guy told me it was $150, then I had steam in my ears when the service counter guy nailed me for another $100.
