Well, it finally happened. I knew payback was coming when I bought the Triumph a couple of years ago. My wife bought her first Hog yesterday. I'll post a picture when the little bugger stops running around.

So, are you going to fatten it up to eat it?

95% of the Harleys ever made are still on the road. The other 5% made it home.

Since im new to Triumph and motorcycles in general I was curious as to what the consensus was about Harley's. Does everyone think they are quality bike? How about in comparison to triumph?

Harleys are really great bikes. I even want a couple of them. It's more about the people who buy them that we like to make fun of. The lifestyle bikers who bounce from bar to bar on them and go 13mph in the twisties when they should be leaning the bike and having fun. And they dress like gay pirates. And on the nicest days of the year when the temperature is perfect and the sky is clear, they all congregate at the nearest HD dealer parking lot and listen to Stairway to Heaven and Free Bird over and over and eat hot dogs and look down at any bike that has a speck of dirt (maybe from riding it!) on it.

Awesome Dave! I couldn't have said it better.

Harleys are good looking, quality, machines but as it's said of lawyers..."Harley riders earn their reputation every day!" God I love making fun of that group...you know the group...the, "let's ride 5 minutes to the bar eat/drink for hours then ride 2 minutes back home!" Because they always ride faster, drunk! I guess it comes with owning the bike...hey that should be their new slogan..."You've tried us sober, now, try us drunk!"

I like the current Triumph 790/865 engine family and Harley big twins about equally well. For custom builds, nothing beats the choices available for the Harley.

The consensus here? *snicker*

In my opinion; bikers are busy riding and living the life, while posers and wannabes spend time complaining about other bikes and riders. Draw your own conclusions...

Interesting thread. I like a couple of Harleys too - the 1200 Roadster and the DynaGlide Custom both come to mind as quality bikes that can actually be thrown around some corners. But my America keeps me way happy.

Had an interesting encounter with 4 Harley riders yesterday. Our group of 4 included one woman on a Suzuki C50 who has only been riding 4 weeks. Their group of 4 (we met on a ferry and started chatting) included a brand new E-Glide Ultra, a Road Glide and 2 softtails. Coming off the ferry into the twisties, the EGlide took off with me in pursuit, and he could REALLY ride, and that bike handled really well, at least as well as my TBA. Our two wives (one was the newbie) led the rest of the pack, and I dropped back later to ride sweep. It was hilarious. Those other three Harleys were all over the road, crossing the double yellow and cutting corners, trying to keep up with my wife (V-Star 1100) and the newcomer's Suzuki C50. All the while, those two ladies just kept leaning and carving, and never crossed the yellow line once!

At the next stop, the good rider on the E-glide came over and heaped (well-deserved) praise on our new rider and my wife, while the other three guys spat and scratched their balls and swaggered into the restaurant for a beer.

Some days, life is very very good.

One of my most memorable moments with the Harley riders attitude was while attending a bike rally in Spain a couple of years ago. I pulled onto the seafront rally site on the Triumph, there must have been 700-800 bikes there, 95% of them were Harley's and Buell's. I listened to " ¿Cuándo usted está comprando una moto verdadera?" (When are you going to buy a real motorcycle ?) from the Harley owners in the 'officially licenced clothes' along with the general feeling that my bike shouldn't be parked up alongside the 'Harley Iron'.

How I smiled when my Triumph took the 'Visitor's Choice' medal !!!

I like the Dyna Wide Glides, just couldn't see justifying the price difference to a TBA.

I know alot of HD guys who don't care what you ride, only that you do ride, but of course there are always the ones who are HD elitists. In my experience, most of those are members of the 15-15-15 club... Spent $15000 on the bike, $1500 on clothes, and rode 1500 miles before placing it all up for sale...

I had a funny thing happen once when I had my previous bike (Honda Shadow). I went to the local HD dealer on a Saturday afternoon to get some chain lube, as they were much closer than the Honda dealer. When I pulled up, a guy in the requisite offically licensed HD paraphernalia asked me If I was there to upgrade. I was taken a bit by surprise but told him that I preferred a bike that actually ran. I went into the dealer, bought the lube and when I came out, another guy came up and asked me what I had said to the first guy. I told him the story and he busted out laughing, seems the first guy was there waiting to get his bike back from the dealer as it had broken down for the third time since he had bought it a couple of months earlier.

I think the Shovel is the last motorcycle HD made. I would love an old Knuckle or flat head but would trade any of them for a 37 Speedtwin. Been riding Triumph for many years loved them then , love them now. just rode mine to VA and held it at about 5,000 RPMs the whole way down 95 and it never missed a beat. My bike has about 22,000 miles on it. (speedo cable broke on the way to VA so have to guess.)

I ran into one of those custom Harley the other day, you know those with the huge engines and the super ultra mega back tire. Riding some back roads to get home... caught up to the guy quickly cause he had to bloody slow down to a crawl in order to turn in the twisties. He noticed me just right behind him and in the straights he would hit it and take off... I have nothing to proof to anyone, I just kept on riding hopeing I would be able to hit the next curves at speeds over 10 mph. No such luck next set of curves there I was again right behind him and quite annoyed. What's the use of having a bike if you can not bloody lean the thing? At a red light close to my house I got next to him in front of the line he looked I nodded... he kept looking at my bike... until the light changed lol, he took off... and I went on my merry way, until the next set of curves when once again I got right on his tail... he looked and I waved LOL, then I turned into my subdivision laughing.

60 horsepower out of 96 cubic inches for $20,000 just doesn't impress me.

I like some HDs. I'd love to get an old pan or flathead to fix up and putt around a bit.

That new XR1200 looks like fun too.

Friend of mine has a screamin eagle V-rod and that thing really goes & he can ride it too. I like the look of some of the other Harleys but having ridden them before wouldnt trade my speedie for any of them.I could go a Night-rod but it would have to be in the garage with the speedmaster.
