Forgot to mention we caught the John Prine show at Wolf Trap in VA last Friday night. Neighbor bought and was holding the tickets. As we are walking in a few minutes late, I hear music that doesn't sound like Prine. Surprise, it's Steve Earl listed on the ticket. He was doing a solo/accoustical show and was pretty good. He's pretty political and threw out plenty of personal comments before/after each song. A little too much banter, that drew negative comments as the show went on. Muscially, excellent. Wrapped with an rousing accoustical version of "Copperhead Road".
Prine was outstanding. He play for about 2.5 hours and must have done 30 songs. All of my favorites save for "Illegal Smile" and "Christmas in Prison". I did yell, "don't be afraid to play a holiday song" as that is my favorite. He was backed by a great upright bass and an electric guitar. He is a real entertainer.
Fortunately we had popped for seats under the shell and stayed dry. A great evening of some very good music.
Bought tickets to the Dick Dale show just released at the Birchmere in NOVA for August. I'll definitely be getting an "I'm a Dickhead" t-shirt! Any other NOVA folks going?

Oh yeah! "Angel from Montgomery". Absolutely one of my all-time favs there, Paula. Bonnie R's version sure is great too!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I got to see Prine last year at Ruth Eckerd Hall in St. Pete. 12 rows back dead center. Exactly odo Quasimodo.
This past weekend was spent in Live Oak at The Wannee Fest with my oldest son. Allman Bros., Gov't Mule, Umphrey's McGee and Drive-By Truckers to name a few. What a wet muddy rocking blast.

Illegal smile and Angel from Montgomery, both excellent songs but my future wife and I had a good laugh the first time we heard Dear Abby.

I saw Steve Earle last year in March in Ann Arbor. All acoustic, one of the best shows ive ever seen.

that "electric guitar player" is Jason Wilber. he has
been playing w/Prine for years. first time he played
for JP, Wilber was seventeen.
when he opens for Prine, Jason Wilber plays acoustic,
a sweet Larrivee Parlor guitar in fact -- that liitle
box has more balls than Prine's all maple Gibson Jumbo
Hummingbird...of course the Larrivee is more than likely
a Spruce/Hog combo(but that is pure assumption on my part.)
Prine has had some great opener's this tour; including
Levon Helm.
the show i saw about 6 weeks ago had a Spanish Pipedream
opener, a wrenching, mid-set, Sam Stone -- JP alone on
stage, a riotous; In Spite of Ourselves, Crazy as a Loon,
Souvenirs...
if you are a JP fan and the opportunity comes
to see him in person, do yourself the very kind
musical favor and gogogopher.
PS: Steve Earl has recently released an album
of all Townes Van Zandt's music, and Jeffrey Foucault
has released an album of all JP's music. both
highly worth listening too.

It didn't appear he just picked up these two players, they had a perfect chemistry. Wolftrap is a VA state park, just outside of DC. Open air, but covered. It was cool and raining that night, what a great atmosphere. He played "Glory of True Love" off the "Fair & Square" album (excellent disc!) I have to say my favorite of the night was "Me, Myself and I" and I've been replaying that one. As he started "Sam Stone", my neighbor, who wasn't familiar with JP leaned over and said: his songs seem to have a lot to do with death. I said: yeah, this one doesn't end well either. Last week, she told me she bought a bunch of JP MP3's and is a fan now. His songs tend to haunt you, in a good way. Quote:

I just say Yes to all those John Prine comments. He appeared at the Univ. MT in Missoula a couple years ago.

I Love him, Al. Not just the music - He just seems so real. On one hand, seems like the guy that anyone could sit under the maple tree, BS and drink beer with till the cows come home and laugh till your sides ache. He has a way of making the saddest stuff - stuff that touches everybody - into something cleaverly amusing. On the other, particularly when you've been touched by a like situation,you can easily find yourself out under the tree crying in your beer. The guy is a true American poet.

I too was at Wanee...I'm a big fan of the Radiators. I camped with the Rads roadies inside the gates by the mini-golf course. What a great time!

Prine was my inspiration to start singing once I learned to play guitar. Saw him at the CalPoly Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo, Cal about 5 years ago. "Please Don't Bury Me" is my personal favorite!!! Was suprised to see he's just as plump and Gray as me now.

I saw Dick and his son Jimmy play Saturday night at the Birchmere in VA. What a great place. We sat about 20' from the stage, had dinner and drinks through the show. It was not what I expected, each played new Fender signature 3" acoustic guitars. Dick did one song on a harmonica and piano. The connection with his son was amazing, this definitely felt like a guy who was on the brink and pulled thru, that much stronger by the experience. He played his hits along with a number of cover songs, including "Rumble" in a nod to Link Wray. During the show, Dick shared a lot of great stories from his years as a player and teased his son a good bit. (one Dale wisdome - good guitar players don't make mistakes, great guitar players make a lot but hide them). Afterwards, he stayed to sign autographs and sell CD's. I was near the front of the line with my "Checkered Flag" CD cover. Dick seemed surprised to see this CD and talked about several of the songs before signing it. The lady in front of me bought his latest, "Spacial Distortion". Dick asked me if I had this and I told him I bought from your site two years ago. I told him I was floating in the pool the night before listening to the CD and my kids were kidding me about playing "Silent Night" in the summer. He seemed pleased I had the disc and told a story about why he included that song. The signed cover will be hung in my garage, near the bikes. My wife, while not a huge Dick Dale fan, loved the show as well and Dick's cover songs. It was a great night in an interesting venue.
