Inspired by Bucky's picture of a milk crate load accessory, I got to wondering who else had/has a milk crate in the gear past?? The crates were unique since they could be easily adapted to most any make/model. You could carry stuff like loaves of bread and not mash them into oblivion. I started off with a crate, but graduated to a LL Bean Wicker pack basket. Got a picture here somewhere, but am too "keyboard challenged" to post it  . jh

Well , back in the day * when we used to raid motel ice machines to fill our coolers , we would go behind a grocery store and also liberate a MILK CRATE as a pedestal for the dirt bikes . Back in the day * dirt bikes had no side stand , we just sat 'em down on a MILK CRATE . You could liberate a second MILK CRATE as a stool to sit on while you worked on the bike . You could put all yer tools in there , too . Man , that was fun . MILK CRATES rate right up there with zip ties and duct tape . * Back in the day is a relative term . For me 'twas the 70's

I've seen about a million different things in/on milk crates. Never actually seen milk in one though.

Had one I used for back and forth to work before the popularity of back packs - back in the '70s and '80s. Still see them once in a while. I actually had two - a blue and a pink ( Which I suspect I used on the days I was in touch with my feminine side. Suppose I was ahead of my time). I've been using back packs since the kids began using them. I always got the hand-me-downs.

I've been looking for a proper wooden crate to lash to the fender rack. They're all over ebay.
Shouldn't have given away that Dupont dynamite case.

I have two plastic milk crates I use as shop seats when they're not carrying mic cables and such for gigs. Handier to have around than an extra pocket...

When i was a young 'un my Dad had a grocery store (one of many), and we delivered groceries (wouldn't that be nice today!) and for no charge. We had these baskets like the plastic ones in the stores today that you walk around with, except these were metal wire ones (made to last). I tied one to the back of my little Honda using a couple of belts buckled together and i used some sort of pad or cardboard underneath to protect the seat. Then, when there was a smaller delivery, i'd load it into a basket and set it inside the one that was semi-permanently on my bike.
As for milk crates, they were the saviour for rock 'n roll bands. We used them to place plywood on for drum risers (put a piece of black cloth around the front and sides), for putting horns up higher on the mid/bass cabs, put cords in 'em, and on and on. I think i still have most of 'em stored away to this day.

Milk crates, more generally known for their many uses such as storage boxes, seats, mini scaffolding, stabilisers for 5 gallon drums, etc, however when stored in the back of the garage, they are like wire coat hangers.
They breed profusely when the lights go out

God, I've used them for practically everything. My entertainment center when first married consisted of milk crates bolted to particle board shelves.
Being in the restaurant business for 30 years, I had easy access to milk crates but when reading this post, I can't recall the last time I saw one in a store. I have one prized milk crate that holds miscellaneous items in my garage. It's emblazoed with "Pennsylvania State Penitentiary". Every once in a while, someone notices it and asked me about it. I just say, "it's a reminder for an error in judgement.........". <g>

the square ones are perfect for toting around 5 gal carboy of homebrew. rectangular for the ever popular free LP storage bin!
