This August I will be making a 1300 mile trek to the elusive 'Floating Mountain' for the first time. My buddy and I are taking his '74 Ford E-300 Econoline Super Van. We are going to throw his '74 Z1 900 and my '05 Speedmaster in the back, so we can play on the salt. I had planned on taking this week of vacation to watch all this noise flying down the great 5 mile track. I was wrong! I instead got volunteered to be a crew member. I have been on a great land speed racing web forum for sometime. It's LandRacing.com, check it out. I was asking all these questions about being a Salt Virgin, and a guy said that I would have more fun working on something instead of just watching! So, I took the job. It's not the right brand of vehicle, but it's a step in the right direction. It's a 120" blown nitro Harley! http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3481.0;attach=12410;image http://www.landracing.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=3481.0;attach=12412;imageIf you want to check out the bike build, got to LandRacing.com Build Dairy-Old Time Lake Racer Bike So, we'll see what happens!

COOL!!! Now that sounds like a great opportunity there, Justin! (and BTW...don't feel too bad about being involved with that Harley crew...Those "big lumberin'" Harleys CAN BE at least pretty good at goin' STRAIGHT down the road at a pretty fast clip, ya know!....right, Wade???!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I don't have much to add about the salt flats, except don't forget to wear your seatbelt . But on the way there &/or back you might stop through Capitol Reef National Park or Dinosaur Natl Monument. Much more interesting than I-80 or I-70. jh

take a few cans of W.D.40 it works great to get the salt off the chrome and some chain lube. you will be glad you did, there is nothing there for miles around so you will want to get the salt off. ENJOY i had a great day when i was there, one that i will never forget.

ive done countless car commercials out there. get a small hudson type sprayer and mix about 8 parts diesel fuel to 1 part automatic transmission fluid. when you get to the end of the access road spray it over the entire undercarriage, especially in the wheel wells. a couple trips out onto the salt is as bad as 10 winters worth of corrosion.
i remember i was out there scouting for a location for a ford commercial and a ferrari blew past me about 5 miles out onto the salt. i stopped to take pics. ten minutes later they pulled up heading back towards the access road. i said "do you realize how much life you just took off that car by driving it out here?" and in a hard cockney accent he said "its a rental mate!" and drove off... lol
