I am just over 20,000 miles and had to adjust the chain twice this season, so I think it's almost time to replace the chain. I have never done this before and I am kinda cheap. I am wondering what experiences you have had with purchasing and dealer help. I like to do my own work, but was researching prices for the chain tool, they seem to be about $100. Has anyone had luck negotiating the install with their dealer, or should I buy a master link and do this myself. Do I need a tool for a master link too? Thanks for any advise

$30.99 at JCWhitney

I also got my chain from them.
I got the el-cheapo non 0-ring, master link type, $21.
5K miles on it so far, no worries.
At one-fifth the price of the expensive chains, I figure anything over 10K will be gravy. Not much stretch so far,
just lube it w/regular grease.
They carry RK o-ring chains too, cheaper than other sources, I'm just on a low budget.

+1 on the regular chains, their good enough for the manufacturer, whos reputation is at stake & they must warranty. Its worked fine on EVERYTHING I've ever owned, including my sons BA, and I've never known of problems with them. Oh, you will find someone post their bad experience, heck, people have seen Elvis, but NOTHING out of the ordinary, (now I do use O-rings on the dirt bikes, and if you ONLY ride you BA in the mud, sand, and water, you may want to reconsider)

Very interesting! O-rings rob HP! Now these underpowered bikes REALLY don't need to worry about chain breakage from torque.

O-ring chains do steal a tiny bit of HP.
That only matters in racing, where a fraction of a second
can mean second place.

And O-rings only add a little bit of protection, and ONLY when newer. Once water or petro. DOES get behind the rings, their screwed (it can't get out). Longer pins, more flex between plates, less support from front to back plate contact. Only for long distance road trippers/Trails riders who change their chains after each long road trip, race, enduro.

I think it's time to replace mine now at 22,000 with almost no lube during the life of the chain.
