Yesterday I decided to do my chain maintenance and some detailing. I put my bike on the lift, cleaned the chain with kero and a grunge brush, let it dry , applied chain lube, let it dry, then decided to take my bike outside to wash it. I backed it out, started it, just to make sure everything is cool before I get it wet, I stood there giving it the once over as it was idling, touching, checking things when I noticed the head of the kick stand bolt was about an inch from the kickstand, I reached down to check it and it fell out. It had backed itself all the way out without me noticing it. the pressure of the bike and the spring were then all thats holding it. Of course I was the only one home, I immediately got on the bike pulled it back in the garage, luckily i hadent put the lift back yet because now i dont even dare get off it, I pulled up next to the lift and half a$$ed get it under the bike without getting off, jacked it up by hand and very nervously get off and put the bolt back in. I have no idea how long its been like that, but I'm checking that sucker a lot more in the future, it scared the $)(# outa me

Z,

Would you mind checking mine too? I am stuck at work for awhile yet today. Friar knows where the secret key is hid.

Thanks,

JH

I had a similar feeling when the arm on the kickstand broke off while I was trying to put it down. It was a real "oh sh..., now what?" moment. Luckily (?) it happened at the dealership, but I was at the side of the building, not the front. I had to sit there and honk my horn until someone came out to put it down for me. Of course the bad news is that a kickstand isn't exactly something the dealer stocks, and they weren't about to sell me one off a floor model. Thankyew Ebay. Now I have the replacement on my bike and a spare one sitting on a shelf in my garage.

Man that is enough to make me want me go out in the rain and check mine.

Can anyone say Blue Locktight?

Worth checking but I'm pretty sure ours has a locknut. One would think you don't need loctite.

Hmmmmmmm.

Hey Tom, are you sure that line wasn't, "IF SHE'LL BLOW...YOU GET OFF!"???

(oh, wait a minute...sorry....that line was probably in one of Rob's videos...never mind)

And John,(and getting back to the issue here), wasn't it you who used a vice grip for a while on your kickstand after that little tang broke off of it.

Ya know, my tang broke off a couple years ago and because I'm such a cheap b*stard and never bought a new kickstand, I've gotten so used to bending over and pulling out my kickstand by hand now that it's become an automatic thing.

(BTW...I'm gonna leave it to somebody else around here to try and make some kind'a semi-obscene joke usin' those "tang", "bending over" and/or "pulling out" lines of mine there...and I gotta strong feelin' that somebody around here is VERY likely to do just that, too!!!...I'm not the ONLY moron around here, ya know!!!)

On mine with the bolt all the way tight theres only about 4 or 5 threads sticking out, definitly not enough to put any kind of nut on it, the mount hole itself is threaded.

Well, Dwight, I'm not flexible enough to bend over and grab my ankles like you are, and I've got this big ol' gut in the way, so I couldn't reach the kickstand while sitting on the bike.

You mean like:

So, you're saying you generally bend over and work the tang with your fingers before pulling out?

Ok, too easy... let somebody else try.

I haven't had cause to use red locktight, and feel free to correct me if
I'm wrong here but isn't red the permanent "You'll never get it off
again." Locktight? Also, wouldn't you want the option of getting it
off should you need to replace or repair it?

I would ALWAYS want the option of GETTING IT OFF. And I hope I never have to repair OR replace it...
Dwight started all this...

Man... Talk about weird... I checked mine at lunch. The bolt hadn't walked itself loose yet, but the nut was a couple of turns loose and ready to fall off the bottom!

It's on the center stand now until I have time to do more than finger-tighten it.

So yours has a nut on the bottom? I cranked mine right down to what i thought was tight and didn't have enough threads left to put a nut on . Maybe i better check it again. Is there a nut on all of them I wonder?

My 07 has a nut with no threads coming through. I just checked... thanks to this thread... and mine was 1 turn LOOSE. I couldn't tell if there was a weld on the nut to hold it place, but it did tighten right up without a wrench on the bottom side.

Thanks Stone!

Don't feel bad-I got off my bike and walked away-without putting the kick stand down. In all the years I've been riding I've never done that particular thing until sAturday. STOOPID!!!

The same thing happened to my kickstand. I was lucky to realize something was wrong when the bike was leaning at an extreme angle and before it fell over. I propped mine up with bricks and phone books until I got a lift. I was unable to tighten it up because the threads were stripped from me trying to hammer the bolt back through thinking it had a nut on the back that was missing rather than that the stand its self was threaded (DUH).
Took a trip to the dealer and get this...they had one from an insurance repair that was a little scraped up....The dealer (gulp) gave it to me for ......free, yup I almost pooped too.
