Okay...someone give me a clue please. I purchased a helmet lock from newspeedmaster.com and have no idea where to bolt the sucker on. This is the little bastard I can't find a place for: helmet lock Has someone found a spot for this? Thanks! Brad

The right handlebar is a popular place to mount it, using the bracket that I believe is included. Park and lock the fork first and the right bar should be swung forward enough to keep your helmet a safe distance from the exhause system.

If your running the stock turn signal brackets, you can use it to mount the helmet lock, put the helmet on the mirror and lock it. Let us know where you end up with it.

Give EnglishYank a shout. He has his mounted down low and keeps it nice and out of sight and easy to use. I think they look butt fugly on the bars.

I put my on my foot control bar. It is completely out of the way, but the only problem is you have to leave your helmet laying on the ground.

Check out my gallery. I don't have a close up pic but I was able to mount it on the frame downtube right next to the ignition. My keys rest on it while I'm riding. I agree with Pat, putting it on the bars looks fugly. I have it tight enough where it is snug on the down tube but the part that your D-rings lock onto is loose enough to rotate so I can take off the fuse panel cover without removing it.

I don't know if the helmet lock I got from JC Whitney has the same mounting system as Brent's, but I put mine on the backside of the liscense plate.

Thanks all, for your help.
EnglishYankee...I checked out your pics and the sideview of your slightly muddy SM shows the helmet lock good enough.
I'm assuming you used the supplied mounting bracket...or did you mod it somehow? I would peek at my SM, but it's at home and I'm at work (dammit).
Thanks,
Brad

I only used the hardware that came with it. I had to shave a little groove in the ignition cover to accomodate the bolt. I'll try to take a pic or two tonight.

Don't know if you need to hide it or not, but I found a great place on the right side tube that runs up past the side cover. Take the side cover off to install and you use all the stock stuff, no adjustments needed. Just make sure that it's high enough so that your helmet doesn't come too close to the pipes. I think mine's about even with the middle of the side cover. Very convenient and doesn't look bad because it's chrome.

I tried to mount it on the right side at first but had problems getting around the side cover. At least that's what I think the problem was, it's been so long ago that I forgot why I went to the left side.

Derek: I was afraid the license plate mounted lock would end up with the helmet pranging the rear signals. Where does your helmet sit when it's locked and are those the stock signals?

Those are Kuryakyn large silver bullets with shortened posts. With a half helmet on the lock, the helmet just covers the rear turn signal, and I don't get any scratches on the fender or anything else marked up on the bike. A full helmet can be a bit fidgety to get it on the lock, but it'll work.
I suppose if some idjit came along and whacked the helmet with his knee it could damage the turn signal, but I haven't had that problem in the 2 years I've had it on the bike.

Does anyone know where you can find a lock similar to a bike lock cable that will fit through a helmet ring? It would enable me to easily lock 2 helmets to the sissybar back rest and wouldn't require mounting anything to the bike.

Look into a bicycle cable lock... Maybe a bit thinner? I have a "bolt lock" that comes with mounting stuff, but it is essentially a thin cable lock. I have an 18 inch and a 6 foot cable. One for the jackets, one for the helmets.

RamSound, you might try a luggage or snow ski lock. REI sells think online, since I'm guessing they don't have snow skis in your neck of the woods: http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?v...amp;x=0&y=0Jon

Thanks for the input. I've seen a few bicycle combo cable locks but neither end fits through the helmet ring. I'll check around... maybe there's one that uses a small padlock and has an end small enough to fit.

An alternative is a piece of 1/8" steel cable (the kind you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes) about 18-24" with small loops crimped into the ends. Use this with a regular Master lock and you now have a jacket & helmet lock.

Have you run accross coated cable already with loops? I don't want bare cable around the paint or chrome.

They have plastic coated cable there (I should have mentioned that, sorry) and that is what I used. I cut off about 2-3" of the plastic and threaded the ends through a couple of their crimp connectors (heavy steel barrels) and just hammered them flat to seal them.
I watch where those ends go but one could certainly get some of that plastic dip for tools and plastic coat the ends including the crimps....
I think the whole rig cost me $6 including the lock.

Not a bad idea Phil. Being in electronics, an easy fix would be to slide on some heat shrink tubing before crimping, then slide the heat shrink over the crimp and heat. That would easily coat the crimps, fast & easy. I'll go by Home Depot tomorrow.

That's an even better solution. btw, keep the captured loops as small as possible and they won't be able to scratch anything.
Another benefit from this rig? You can coil it up and stick it in your pocket.
