I have a set of Specialty Spares Long Slash Cuts. I was wondering if anyone has removed the packing material from the baffles and re-inserted the baffles. If yes, how is the sound?. I wouldn't mind the pipes being a little louder, but don't want a harsh snappy sound, I like the currrent mellow sound.

Nice thing about re-packable? You can take it out, don't like it, wrap it and pack it again!

After reading the part about the kids running away screaming, I had an unstoppable sick laugh that came over me. Does that make me a bad person?

That's how I ride with my SS; Metalbaffle only. I've gotten ALOT of compliments on the sond of my bike, seems like people dig it wherever I go. And I do too.
It does, though, seem to be a little throaty it when I'm on the throttle. It absolutely screams. Is it possible to lower the pitch at high speeds? Anybody know?
EDIT: Spelling...

Specialty Spares recommends (if they are very settled in or you want to tone down a bit) adding a layer of 4-stroke baffle material around the original baffling. You can get it at most motorcycle shops.
I've tried no baffles - way too loud for me. Metal baffle only - good but a little raspy on the top end. I like them worn and settled in with one layer of baffle the best. If you remove all baffle material it will sound harsher (high end). The material takes that out without having a lot of effect on the low end.

RamSOund thanks for the description. That's what I was looking for. It appears that I will like it better with the packing material, as I really like the low end sound, but the raspy high end sound is not to my liking. My pipes have a bit over 4K miles on them and they are sounding better than when I first put them on.

19T front sprocket. Or the custom / experimental / nonexistent baffles I described here some time ago.
"Imagine a long, skinny oval, drilled with a few thousand holes. It would be welded into the pipe at a diagonal, so all gas entering the pipe has to go through the plate. I think that might sound a little better. "

Me. I doubled the layer of packing and got the deep tone I was looking for. For those wishing to run without baffles I believe this trick would be appropriate http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/exhaust.htm

I also wanted to tone mine down a bit and tried adding 4-stroke material. The original baffle material got messed up while removing the baffle so I ended up removing the old material and added new fiberglass baffle with the 4-stroke material around it. Big mistake. Now I've made it sound worse. Very harsh and raspy and louder. I'm thinking it's because all that material is packed in too tight, making the baffle unable to "breathe". Has anyone tried welding a washer at the end of the baffle? I'm thinking of trying this and wondering what size washer.

For what it's worth: I just repacked my Emgo reverse cones this past weekend... with stainless steel wool. In the 2 years I've had 'em on they've burned completely through two sets of fiberglass in short order (spent most of my time riding with no fiber, just stupid loud). The steel doesn't work as well as the fiberglass, no question. HOWEVER... it's a damnsight better than no packing at all, and it will last more than half a season. I'll keep y'all updated on any changes/problems/benefits. --Jaeger

Where do you want to weld it and why?

I removed about 25% of the material around the baffle for a bit more sound and a little deeper. I wrapped the material with a piece of "hardware screen", which is flexible chicken wire type material from Lowes. That held the material in place. After a few years, some of the material has started to degrade. Might have to repack with new material next year, I'm pretty sure my bike is louder than it was when the pipes were new. I rode a short distance last week beside a local biker-type guy on a Speedy running Sceptres. I always thought Sceptres were pretty loud, but my bike was louder. At the first light he drifted back to me and asked what kind of pipes I was running.

Where: to the baffle. Why: to restrict airflow and make it quieter.
I called Dale at Specialty Spares and asked him about tack welding a washer to the baffle to tone the exhaust note down a bit. He recommends a washer with a no less than 1" inside hole diameter tack welded to the front of the baffle. Somewhere else I think I read it should be on the BACK of the baffle, but I went ahead a welded a washer with a 1.25" diameter hole to the front of the baffle. It definitely toned it down a bit, but still has a deep throaty sound so I'm happy.
