 starter problem

it has been awhile, i have been having problems with starting, as wierd noise coming from the left side off bike i pulled the cover to look for teeth messed up, looks fine, pulled the starter it appears to be good, it seems to when put power it seems to spin slow, so i looked up a price and it is about 900 bucks any ideas?

Is it a loud ticking sound? Is your battery fully charged?

this is coming from the case, i am pretty sure solenoid is good but i will check. it appears there are sever gears in volved with the starting of these bikes.

Mines an 02, had problems with starting, checked wiring, changed a blown fuse, brought a cheap solenoid off ebay ( triumph use the same solenoid on most of there models, so there not bike specific), everything fine now.

you know, I read that post when it was first up there..... very scary. That would really "Vacuum Moose Balls" if it keeps happening.

well i guess i am going home tonight and pull the cover to see if mine has snapped, i have a feel that is the problem, pull the stater and put power to it seems to be spinning freely my bike has backed not alot i guess just enough to get me to this point.

Don't panic yet, I have seen many starters work fine under no load then not work under a load.

pull the case last night no signs of broken or cracks, i out of curisity put my finger on the gear closes to starter
and hit the starter start spun, gear moved, contacted bigger gear, and then it appeared the gear bolted to a smaller gear acted lick a bentix on a regular start or old stater, i am guessing this what is suppose to happen, i feel that my solnoid is bad, is there a good way to test this? i also ordered a manual today.

connect solenoid to the battery (use some wires)using those smal spade terminals if circuit is closed it should jump inside if jumps is ok

My starting issues were resolved by a $5 relay, after I bought a $50 solenoid....
Don't bypass the simple stuff it's easy to check. If your solenoid is getting power it's not the switch or relay.

For future reference you can replace the OEM solenoid with a much much cheaper one from the auto parts store.
I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains.
