In the How-Tos, one of the tools specified for valve adjustment is a "Micrometer with .001mm resolution." I haven't ever owned a metric micrometer, but I'm thinking that might be a typo. It's equivalent to about 0.00004 inch, and I don't think standard mics are that accurate. Anyway, I no longer own any mics, so if I buy one for this use, what should I get? Will a standard 0-1", .001" work OK? Or does this job really require the additional accuracy of .01mm resolution?

I used a std. 0-1" mic. and it worked just fine and my valves were in spec. when done. Now I used a top quality mic not a Harbor Freight Chinese mic.

Can I use calipers for this, or is there a possibility the old shims won't be 100% flat?

No the shims will not be 100% flat, you need a mic.

OK, I'll buy or borrow one. Seems this first valve adjust isn't gonna be so cheap after all. Thanks for the info!

You wanna talk about valve shim adjustment, and cheap? Word of warning as I've just finished mine up. DO NOT DROP ANYTHING DOWN THE IDLER GEAR SLOT. It's fun fishing, and even more fun replacing every gasket on your bike when you're done digging. Minimum $300 for the dealer to get it out. Just to be safe stuff rags into the holes.
I bought a cheap mic from harbor freight, and it worked out ok for me. Make sure you've got a good low range torque wrench too. Those banjo bolts only get 8Nm.

Precision is the reason for three decimal places. Shims come that way e.g., starting at 2.000mm and incrementing by 0.025mm to 3.200mm
Well now. Having a micrometer in hand a 2.975 may measure 2.980, while another 2.975 may measure 2.962. Knowing this and what you need affords a selection within a size category.
