It has happened to several of us. No definite cause has been established that i'm aware of. Mine did it sporadically for a few hundred miles, then it stopped acting up and has been fine ever since. It hasn't done it again in more than 10,000 miles. The odometer never missed a beat, just the speedo. There's definitely a possibility (as in my case) that it will eventually straighten itself out.

Cinnamon Girl's got funky in 30 degree weather riding home from the Arkansas rally last year. She is a very fast beech too. 5 miles per hour while on her sidestand now, and a consistent 10mph over the real speed when underway. odo is spot on. And having a tach, I don't need a speedometer, although I would like to have one. (I do have a spare speedometer but installing same would ruin't my mileage count.)
Cold weather and speeds above 85 mph were the primary factors in Cinnamon Girl's speedometer unintended recalibration...brrrr

The drive cable is probably in need of lubrication or might have a bad spot that will eventually break. There is a damper in the speedometer that smoothes out vibrations, but the cable catching and then snapping ahead will overcome the damper and give you an insanely high reading.
