Hi, Well while on my ride from MN to IL the cover plate where the clock / tach flew away. I think the car behind thought it was a spaceship. It hung just above my head before it frizbeed away ...... SWOOSH Anyone know where I could find one or should I just suck it up and by a clock or Tach. And which would you buy ????

I have a cover if you want it. Personally, I prefer the tach.

if your bike is after '03, then it's as easy as plugging in wires

I think +6 for tach? If you're not fond of the oem tach, and half way decent at fabrication. I took a drag specialties 0 to 8000 tach and got it to fit into that location with minor fab really. I might be able to get you some pics if you want.

I guess I'll go against the grain here and say, get the clock. In my opinion the tach position there is limiting. It just seems to be a bad location down on the tank where you will have to crane your neck to see it and while your looking down anyway you might as well just run off the road. My speedo is on the tank and I hate that positioning too. My first bike, a Honda, had the good sense to put the speedo on the bars, God knows what designers are thinking when they place your instruments out of your field of view.

I've heard a lot of people say that the tach is useless because it's hard to see. I've never had to move my head or stretch my neck or strain anything to look at it, I just move my eyes down and there it is. Just think it's strange that people find it difficult to look at. Maybe it's me, I like to move my head and look around when I ride anyway, not just lock it in the forward position...

+1 I don't have a problem seeing my tach either. Are you saying that the clock in the same position would be different? I guess you'll have to stop the bike to look at the clock now won't you?

I agree completely with your post. I too have tried to figure how the tach was hard or inconvient for anyone to see. Makes you wonder? Also have never figured out why anybody would say a tach is not useful or neccessary on modern machines with rev limiters. I like to get the most enjoyment out of a bike and I find a tach a whole lot more beneficial than riding by seat of the pants...or a clock.

I wear a full face helmet. The bottom of the helmet impedes vision of the tank area where the tach would be. As far as the clock goes I wouldn't watch the clock like I would a tack. Glance at the clock every now and again to get a general sense of the time and your good. I may divert a little more time to it were I running late, but still not as much as I may reference a tach. Also, I never said that I wouldn't want a tach, or that they were of little use. I just want my instruments to be in my immediate field of view.

If you don't know what time it is without looking at a time device, give-or-take 15 minutes, you need to sober up. Can ya tell I don't wear a watch? And I removed all clocks from the motorsickles over a year ago. Really need to know the time? Peek at your cell phone.
Tachs are good when the speedo is inoperative.
Regarding purchasing a tach, try fleabay. I bought one there and it came with the console complete with all those hard to keep indicator lens too. Cost? $100.00 bucks.

I never had a problem seeing my tach either...until recently. I bought a full face helmet this year, and with it on I really have to look down to see it. First year riding with the full face, don't know how long it will last once the heat gets here this summer. If it ever gets here.

I'm wondering if maybe our riding position is a little different causing the sight issue. I'm 6'2" and I've got a set of 30" drag bars. So I'm slightly forward and up which is probably a difference with someone shorter with buckhorns. They sit a little more back and relaxed.

I'm also 6'2, with pullback risers on the America bars, and I sit way back. Maybe height has the most to do with it, I guess if you're 5'6 or so, you would have to stretch to see it.

I'm 5'9 and I like the tach where it is in the dash. No problem to glance at it when I want to. Same with my temp and oil pressure down on the engine.

+28 on the tach. Mine's easy to see, and if you want a clock as well just get one that fits on the steering head bolt or the handlebars. Heck, get the 'bar one, and a temp gauge for the other side. Installing the tach takes 3 bolts, 1 nut, and two little plugs, and it comes with easy instructions.
