Ever since my brother and I were kids we talked about being in a club together. When we were in our 20's we partied like rock stars and the mythological "club member." Now, in our late 30's we were asked to prospect a club. It's a 99% club, I have a family and I just like to ride with a bunch a guys and throw back a few too many beers after the ride. It seemed harmless, for me. For my brother, the world is much different. He had a hard time making it out of our 20's "clean." He is a dedicated member of NA and clean for 6 years. He told me today that for his peace of mind it would be better if he didn't join. I feel bad because I'm glad he is backing out of this thing we always wanted to do together. I just can't "watch out" for him anymore. Don't get me wrong, he doesn't need me babysitting him. This is my hang up. I've always felt somewhat responsible for his problems eventhough he has always told me that he knew he was going to be an addict since he was a teenager. I need to get over it. So I'm joining the club. In the past I may have backed out with him but I'm going forward with it and on sunday I get my patches. I don't know why I'm bringing this up here, I just needed to get it out. By the way, out of 30 members, I have the only Triumph and guess what bike all these HD owners are checking out in the parking lot?

It's a 99% club but it's not a support club for a 1% club is it? Years ago the Hermano's tried to recruit me and my friends to start a local chapter but I didn't like the company they keep (Banditos). A couple of my other friends who did join got into some legal trouble not long after that related to hanging out with some Banditos who were "passing through."

What is the name of the club?

No, we don't support any 1% clubs. They did have to meet them and let them know what we were about. Some members from another chapter were followed by a 1% club and harrassed.
Rev, I would rather not say the name. Some of these guys were told they could lose their jobs if they joined a club.

I am glad your brother didn't do it. Ask permission to form a club? Prospect to gain acceptance? Yep, that is everything your brother should not do. Self reliance and acceptance is what he needs and clearly has. Good for him.

I know his path. For me, it meant ditching dozens of years of 'relationships' in order to ride the straight and narrow. Kudos to your brother for knowing his limitations and keeping his sights set on the goal; 17 clean years later all I can do is look ahead and not wallow in the past, but, that means letting certain things go by and not joining in.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

The dream is definately not over! You're concentrating on the wrong dream. My identical twin brother Kevin and I belonged to a motorcycle club together. We enjoyed each minute we spent together especially riding and building custom bikes, which we did in our spare time. I am the addict. I'm proud of my 19 years of sanity and thankful that my children have never seen me on the other side. Sadly, my brother took his own life 4 years ago and my life is forever changed. Join the club, have fun, Don't ever miss a ride with your brother... you never know...

I didn't think a MC club would let a triumph rider in, thought it was all "american" bikes. Good for your brother in knowing his limitations, and you can still ride with him right?

I'll always ride with him first over anyone. Short story...
My brother and I work together so we usually plan on riding in together every morning. One day we were going in different directions so I head in for the 12 mile ride to work and halfway there I see a bike screaming up behind me. I say to myself, who the heck is this idiot. Well the idiot was my brother. But to see him pull up next to me put a smile on my face from ear to ear. And at that moment I realized this was what it's all about.

Bingo. Now you're getting it.
Good job on your brother for knowing his boundaries...I applaud his commitment to his recovery.
I'm sure you'd rather have him clean and riding on this side of the grass- the road to relapse is not always clearly marked.

Kudos to you both for your decisions. As the Triumph motto says "Go your own way".

I have never been a club person but always preferred to just ride with a few good friends as and when we wanted to. For me the quality of these rides was worth a 1000 rides a may have done with a club

Tha'ts cool but the thrill of riding with a unified pack of 40 or more brings on a whole new feeling of rider satifaciton.

The dream is never over, Me and my brother bought our first bikes together. we always rode together whenever we could. We had planned on going back into the guards together. He was killed last year in a car accident. For all you who still have brothers living in no matter what condition, be thankful. You never know what kind of hand your going to get dealt or when your going to have to pony up. good for you and your bro. ride as much as you can, whenever you can. I ride for my brother now.....
