Ok here it is guys. I couldn't find the thread where I promised to post this stuff when I found out from my friend what it was. It's POR15 and he says he thinks it's tougher than powder coat. I never personally used the stuff but he swears by it. He says to use Metal Ready that they sell too. It has zinc phosphate in it that reacts with the coating so it etches in.I know very little about paint so I can only relay what he tells me. website

Zinc products are becoming more and more popular, it is mostly used as a "paint on" galvanization alternative, I personaly don't think it is as good as hot dipping but it is far more cheaper and faster. We used such a product for coating bolts for a bridge where scheduling was too tight to wait for hot dipping, the expected life span of the bridge was less the 15 years so the engineers approved it (construction/logging bridge), it is also a great solution for coating metals which are part of an existing structure such as fences, silos, on and on. Just a bit of brain candy for zinc products.

This was for the guys who were cutting tabs off the frame to gain that open look. A tough product to touch up the bare metal left after cutting the tab off. As I said above I never used it so I can't personally vouch for it.

My son stripped a Chevy S-10 down to the frame and used POR-15 on it. Between lack of money and lack of interest, the truck sat in my yard for about 5 years. When I finally called the tow truck, I did notice that there were no signs of rust on the frame and suspension, so the stuff does work.

POR-15 as a powercoat substitute?? Never heard of that. It's used extensively for restoration projects where rust is a problem.. particularly on frames, floorboards and internal body panels. Although the web site doesn't say it, "POR" is supposed to be an acronym for "Paint Over Rust", and it will stop rust dead in it's tracks and permanently. It's not cheap, but I know a LOT of people who swear by it. POR-15 web siteCheers, Brad

I've used it restoring old cars and it does stop rust dead. It works as advertized, wich is rear these days. If you get on your skin it doesn't come off until you grow out of it. I got some on my fore arm above my gloves, reaching through a part I already painted and it was there for the better part of two weeks. Be carfull.

It is some good stuff. I think I remember my brother using it to coat the internals of his bmw's gas tank. I think it was an 85' bmw r100s. Anyways, it had been sitting for quite some time and we knocked as much rust out as we could, but in the end we coated the he11 out of it with the POR15. Worked like a charm... even fixed a small leak problem that was occuring at the seem. Don't know how long that lasted, but worked for the 3 years he had it as he restored it.

My friend uses it on old VWs he restores for a living. He says it's tough and he uses it as a powder coat substitute. I had mentioned it in another thread as such so that's why I posted it that way.
