Hey guys. I have a huge mellon. Almost a size 8 for a fitted cap, and it's fairly oval shaped. Any suggestions on a brand of helmet I should look at? I have a 3xl HJC right now, but it's your VERY basic black model, and it's a few years old, time for an upgrade. Flip face would be nice, but I'd settle for standard full face. I like the look of those Icons with the rubbery finish to them. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
Benny

The Schuberth Concept comes in 3XL but any flip face is going to be tight on the chin.

Check out the Arai Signet GTR. That's one of their "Long Oval" shaped lids that's really nice.

I have the same problem, and found that some Shoei full face fit. might also try the following motorcycle-helmets

scroll down the page to the lid section

Never tried them myself so cannot say if they are any good

Hey Benny, Hows it going? You guys going to come up to CT this spring? As to the helmet issue-I hear bubble wrap works pretty good...

I bought the HJC CL Max modular...it's great for when you stop for gas or run into a store...just flip it up & people can understand you when you talk. I would imagine they come in 3xl....Sorry, was meant for benny

Same thing here Benny,

When the ballcap says "one size fits all", I get suspicious. When the old high school football team got fitted out with new uniforms and helmets, I had to wear an old Roosevelt era size 8 helmet. I broke down and special ordered a felt (western, not m/c) hat from Billings five years ago.
I've worn helmets for years that I could get on OK, but last year finally special ordered one that actually fit correctly (size/shape). It's a 3/4 and not full face. Don't know much about the full-face market, but the mfrs others listed are reputable. If your spending the dollars, be patient and find one that really fits. You'll be happy.

john

..a friend of mine says it's Danish genes in the pool, as her husband and brother in law all have extra large mellons. I have a few Danish genes rattlin' around, maybe there's something to it?

Hi Curly,

I think that is the next helmet I am going to buy. The flip up kind. Chy has one and loves it. HJC is a good name in helmets.
Now on a softer note how about this type of helmet?

When my dad went to boot camp, he told his drill sergent that his helmet didn't fit, the sergent took the lining out and put it back on his head. Thanks for the tips guys. I'm a little leary of buying anytihng over the internet, helmet wise anyway, so I'll just shop around I guess.

My advice would be to go to a motorcycle show. There's usually a few dealers with a hell of a lot of helmets in all styles, colours, and sizes.

And hey I have to agree 'we of large melon' have them for the larger brains.......what's that whistling noise?

Yeah it's too bad I won't be around for the NY show this year... But there are a couple large multi-brand dealers around here with really good helmet selections. I'll just shop around and take my time. Good thing it's still winter...

Hi Moe, I really like it...never was one for full face helmets, but this one works for me. It's a tough choice though after seeing that nice pink one.

I have the same problem. I run a silver HJC CL-12 that's getting a little long in the tooth after three years. I would love a modular helmet. I tried a XXXL Schuberth Concept helmet on in Missoula at the BMW dealership and they run a little small. If I'm paying $400+ for a helmet it better fit better than that. Someone mentioned the HJC CL-Max. I think it comes in XXXL but I hesitate to buy one through mail order without trying it on first. Back in Sept. '03 I tried on a XXL Jarrow modular helmet at the BMW dealer in SLC and it almost fit. They listed two different XXL helmets on their web site - one was probably a half-size larger than the other. But I never could find another dealer, and again, I wasn't going to buy one via mail order just to find out (that dealer didn't have the slightly larger XXL).

In any event, here is a good link for finding super sized helmets.

My head's not as big as yours, only a little above average, and I'm comfortable in an Arai medium. But bigger than this they have an L, and X, an XXL, and an XXXL, with three shell shapes to choose from. They're expensive, but nice.

I'll definitely try on a few before I buy anything. I suppose if I find a particular brand and size that fits, I could then order a different style or finish online if they don't have it at the dealer, ya know? Last time I was trying on lids, I never asked for help, I am sure the dealer has more sizes in the stock room.

It seems that the really cool looking Araia helmet with sorta the British flag on it only comes in long oval (never used in the descpription of my head, can we say large round mellon) and in a price I'm sure would not fit...... I know, how much is your head worth.......$600 may be the upper limit.....

bennybmn,

I have the same problem as you, - namely a huge cranium.

The only helmets that fit me is a HJC half-shell, or an Arai XXXL. In a full-faced helmet the Arai XXXL is the only helmet that fits. HJC does come close, but Arai is just right.

I did try on one of those funky HJC full-faced helmet with hinged chin-piece, and it seemed to fit. That might be an affordable option as it was under 200 bucks.

Good luck,

-BT

BT,

The HJC modular helmet you tried on, was that the Sy-Max or the CL-Max? I've got an HJC full face XXXL that fits great but is getting long in the tooth. How would you compare the fit of the full face XXXL to the modular (which ever model) XXXL?

Thanks,
FJ

Hiya Ben
I haven't read all the postings here so sorry if I repeat anything.
Like yourself, I too am blessed with a large brain (!!) and have a pig of a job getting a comfy lid.
I have a KBC 'TK 9' full face (I think it's XXL) and it's great. It's about 12 months old and, when I was having bike lessons a year or so ago, the instructors suggested replacing lids every couple of years anyway - depending on use.
May sound over the top but they do get dinked and knocked and you only have one head right??
Good luck in the search.
Ride safe

Hey Benny. Have you tried on line yet? Powersports4less have some good deals and also there was a site I heard about a while ago here called Hemletsrus, I don't know the e-mail for that one. They also offered some cool graphics for a very reasonable price. I also have a big nogin.
Good luck with your search.

Benny, I've been in the same boat. I'm wearing the HJC Synchrotech right now in a 2x and it's okay, but it's got a pretty good hotspot in the front. I'm a round oval. ARAI's got a line that is inbetween a Signet and the normal that seems to fit really nice, but you're looking at a nearly $600.

If you want a modular, ARAI makes the Synchrotech. I tried in a XL and it was very nice, well made and supposed to be a lot quieter than the Symax. I think it's mid $300

Thanks for the info guys. Sounds like I'll be trying on an Arai. There is a delaer near me that has at least 4 brands in stock, so I think I'll go there first. Real leary of online, at least till I find a model/size that I want, maybe then if there's a better deal online I'll grab something, ya know? Thanks again.

Benny, Sorry man, I had my names mixed up. I have a HJC SYMMAX now that is okay. The really nice and comfortable one that I have tried is the Arai Synchrotech, which is a flip up. The full-face Arai's come in some different sizes like the signet and fit better than anything I've tried so far, but they are awfully proud of them ($$$$)

Today I stopped in to one of the (few) local bike shops. They have a shipment of HJC CL-Max modular helmets on the way, including an XXXL. Now I get to try it on first instead of trying my luck.

Got to try on a XXXL HJC CL-Max modular helmet yesterday. Fit pretty good, though it seemed pretty snug. But my other HJC hasn't fit snug in years. I think I'll be ordering one up soon.

Please don't use your local stocking dealer to 'try on' and then order on-line to save $3 or $4! It is rude and drives the stocking dealers out. It will all turn into: "here's the catalog, what would you like me to order.......

Unless the local dealer is a jackass. Or has an insane markup, I mean way beyond MSRP. Otherwise I agree.
