Just a reminder to allways wear long pants when riding. It was realy hot here on Sunday and was just going for a short ride to the store.I had a pair of shorts on and a wasp flew up my leg and bit me 3 times on the upper leg.I know better than that.Could have been a lot worse

The t shirt, shorts and sandal bunch have already been very active around here. What I really hate is grandpa, in shorts, taking his grandson/grandaughter down the road in similar attire.

We all know I don't wear a helmet from Dwight and I bantering back and forth. Saw about the most stupid guy I have ever seen a couple days ago behind me,I was driving my van. Some kid on a crotch rocket in shorts , wife beater, sneakers with no socks, no helmet (in this case he should have had one in my opinion), and no EYE PROTECTION! (law to wear eye protection here and a no brainer) This kid was looking around everywhere except where he was going and letting me get a little ahead so he could ride wheelies up to me again. This was in traffic coming into town too. He kept doing this through town running right up to the back end of people and hard on the binders. All it would have taken was one person to tap the brakes for what ever reason and he would be one sorry boy, or even a person to change lanes since it is 4 lanes into town, 2 each way.

I learned all I need to know about life by killing smart people and eating their brains.

Seen a lot of those morons around Philadelphia and here in State College, to quote the Zucker Brothers’ “Airplane” line…”I say, let ‘em crash!”

With that being said, I need to get on my soap box…and up…there, that’s better. I will not comment on Dog’s lack of headgear. I will; however, make a point to anyone thinking of wearing shorts, sandals, and a wife beater, or any combination of the aforementioned.

My wife was working in the local emergency room approximately six years ago when a motorcycle accident victim came in. Of course, the motorcyclist was not at fault, some cager inadvertently made the famous “left turn” in front of them. The cyclist impacted and over the car he went. He was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and sneakers (no helmet). The impact did not kill him but he died because of road rash. He had lost so much skin sliding across the pavement that he simply bled out.

So, there you have it, there was no head trauma, no impact trauma, just loss of flesh. Scary, isn’t it?

One last thing before I get off my box…we all know motorcycling is dangerous, so I ask: Why not make it as safe as you can?

There, I’m finished; I’ll get off the box now.

When I was a teenager we used to hang out at the local pool. One of the lifeguards left for home (a very short distance away) with nothing on except a helmet and swim shorts. Guess what happened... you got it, he slid on some gravel in a corner and went down. Road rash does not even come close to describing what happened to him. He lived but can't imagine the pain he suffered.

I agree... wear stuff that protects you!

I have never been a leather pants/chaps type of person so still in denim. Just thinking of addtional protection and wondering if anyone has used the kevlar lined pants or seen them put to use? I am wearing armor under the jeans but thinking that will tear away in a slide. Good for the first bounce or two but then not much. Thoughts?

I thought the bedazzling would provide the extra safety or at least provide quite the spark show as you skid along.

I wear Draggin' Jeans and even got to "test" a pair a few years back. Low speed, about 25mph, crowded onto the shoulder by an asshat in a Tahoe, lost traction and went down. Slid a ways, tore up my gloves, ripped the back pocket off the jeans, didn't even scuff my First Gear mesh jacket w/armor. Absolutely no injury to me. Except that I couldn't find a throwing rock in time to nail the bast*rd

When I was 19 or 20, a motorcycle was all I had for transportation. I always wore jeans and boots, but never any real upper-body protection. Because of the summer heat in Dallas, I often rode with a no-sleeve leather vest that didn't close in the front. One afternoon I was rounding a curve at about 35 MPH, got distracted, and ran into the curb. I slid face down on my bare chest on the asphalt, jumped the curb, then slid up the sidewalk (still face down) for another 10 feet or so. When I got up, my chest and palms looked like hamburger. It took about thirty minutes to push the bike home, and by the time I got there, I was startin' to smell. The smell wasn't because I was sweating; the temp was about 105° that day, and I smelled like rotten meat. Seriously - rotten meat! So there I was, chewed up, hurtin' like he11, bleeding all over the place, and smellin' like the back of a butcher shop. I recovered OK, but it left one of the stronger impressions of my life. Nowadays, I always wear either a thick leather jacket or armor. The armor in the Rochester jacket has already saved me from a repeat of that ordeal. I won't go riding without it.

And I'm gonna be about the show! I don't have the green backs to customize a beautiful bike like Dave's, but studs (chrome, Dave!) only cost a quarter and colored stones another dime extra!

Rotten meat!

Jack, I give you credit, it would have taken a lot for me to get back on a bike after that.

I think the common thread between your story, Bill’s and Keith’s bears repeating…accidents don’t have to happen at 65mph + and involve tractor-trailers to do serious damage to our soft parts! Most importantly, there are plenty of clothing options on the market now that everyone is able to keep the look they want while maintaining the highest level of safety (a$$less chaps excluded, of course).
Oh look at that, I got on the box again.

When we were kids, my brother was riding one handed with some dry cleaning in the other when he hit fresh pea gravel. He was wearing pants and shirt but still got quite a bit of road rash. He had actually cut school that day and gone swimming and a few days later turned up with poison ivy on top of the road rash. That was before steroids and he was one miserable person for many days.

I ride AGATT and I get sneered at by some people but my I've very fond of my skin and hope to keep it until I don't need it anymore. The vision of that young girl sliding down then highway after coming off her boy friends bike still makes me shudder.

AGATT, I like that. I never knew there was a term for my specific OCD before now!

Couldn’t agree more about keeping the skin, Dick!

I know I’m one of those people who don’t mind getting sneered at, especially when I pull up amongst a flock of t-shirt clad HD riders, lift my full-face HJC and say, “mornin’.” It gets them every time!

Ah, let the sneers and jeers begin!

Even when riding my brand H bike, I wear my heavy jacket. I have too much invested in artwork to risk having it all scraped off. And, although I'm still not convinced that the safety plusses outweigh the minuses, I wear my lid to reduce the number of bug impacts. Things are just different when you live in a neighborhood zoned for commercial agriculture.

I love the line from Wild Hogs when Travolta says he doesnt want anything coming between him and the road (eg helmet) and Martin Lawrence says you will when your head hits it. I get a laugh every time.

I slipped on a corner on loose gravel at around 40kph. Draggin Jeans were scuffed on the side (now white where there was blue). Bruising was a bit rough but no road rash. They look ok and I find them pretty comfortable, although slightly warm when standing around in hot weather. I would recommend.

I bought a pair of Diamond Gusset Motorcycle Jeans recently, I have not worn them yet but they are supposed to be comparable to the Draggin Jeans. They have Kevlar inserts at the knees, sides, and in the backside area. I will have to give them a try when I get a chance to ride again. I paid $90.00 new with a 10% off offer from Diamond Gusset.

Holy crap, they have big sizes! I've always wanted Draggin Jeans but they're only for skinny people.

Even better, you can measure your favorite jeans and they'll match the waist for you. Not custom tailored but they'll measure new (made in the USA) jeans to get the closest match.

Just a quick note to go along with the Gusset Jeans, I have 2 pair of the regular jeans and my motorcycle jeans and they are very comfortable and seem to be very well made. I bought one pair of regular jeans to see how they fit before spending $100.00 on the motorcycle jeans and after wearing them for a couple weeks I ordered the motorcycle jeans and another set of regular jeans. I have yet to wear my motorcycle jeans other than around the house yet but they are comfortable as well. The jeans are a little pricey but fit well and comfortable.

Sliders make some nice looking pants too, Kevlar reinforced and cost a bit less.

I'll be trying some in the near future as my Draggin' jeans are getting a bit worn (and loose )

Those look like nice pants, I will have to look into them. My Tour Masters are getting very ragged after repeated washings over 4 years.

I prefer pants over jeans because if the pants are a light color, they don't attract the heat that dark jeans do. If they are a good mesh like the Tour Master wearing them over jeans is really cooler than the jeans themselves.
