Totally gutted, no idea what went wrong but I think it looks horrid!! going to put the airbox back on but cut the front openings a bit so the small filters can slot in and I can keep the 150 jets

Here's my opinion. I like the battery relocation. Good work. I would chop up your airbox in a way that all the mounts will still mount such as your side panel, and cheese graters. Kinda like you said, just cut an opening in the front of the airbox to fit the filters. It would look all better. A little tip for cutting plastic airbox. Take a propane torch and a couple different sized putty knives. Heat the knives till red hot and insert into the plastic melting a perfectly straight line without discoloration of the plastic.

Have a look at what everyone else has done before you proceed, I am sure people will post what mods they did after removing the airbox...

The look isnt for everyone. I think a big part of your problem is those tiny air filter pods, they kinda leave a lot less to the imagination. Also that big breather tube gets a little filter on the end, cut back, and redirected over to the sprocket cover side (see pic). I also got a smaller t-100 sprocket cover to replace that big old stock george forman grill. And of course those tabs on the frame get cut off, but thats the point of no return.

You should be able to put the airbox back and not have to cut too much away because you have the smaller filters. I rode mine around for a while with the bigger K&N filters protruding inside of the cut back airbox.

Just make sure when youre cutting on the right side, you leave the mounting holes for the side cover.

Got some larger filters coming tomorrow all being well.. will see what its like then,

Im actually also thinking about putting airbox back on, and running with no filter in it, see what its like.. could put a stocking type mesh over the big hole to filter out bricks etc.. Im at a loss as to where to go.. yours looks ok.

I do have a small chrome filter for the breather.. I just STOPPED as soon as I didnt like it

Eh?....I dont see the point in riding without a filter...Its not like its gonna add 50HP or anything.

I think people on here get confused and think that they need to relocate the battery just to have pods on their carbs. Its totally possible to keep the sidecovers and airbox and still ride with pods. You just need to get creative with how you cut back the airbox. If you want a clean finished look, get the freak kit, or make the brackets to support the cheese graters yourself.

The "without" filter statement was so I could still have my 150 jets in.. it was just an idea to see if it would run ok, I have been trying to keep all my original parts so if I ever sell the bike I can make it back to standard (get a better deal from the dealer)if I do end up hacking the airbox then thats a NO GO BACK option..

well you could always check the classifieds for a stock airbox and go nuts. Ive always heard that opening up the bottom of the box with a k&n stock replacement filter is an alternative and gives you just as much gain as pods. You'll have to check out the old threads about it.

The dealers always gonna give you trash for it anyway...unless youre selling it tomorrow, worry about stock when the time comes.

yeah if you look at the top pic at the top engine mount you'll see a little nut through one of the existing holes in the mount. I used a small turn buckle with 1 hooked end to hold the carb and and the eye hole end to be bolted at the engine mount. You'll have to adjust the length a bit and pry the hooked end a bit bigger, but it does the job just fine.

Anyone have some close-ups pics or drawings of the brackets?

I only have drawings/pics of the battery relocation bracket

Youre looking for the brackets that hold the cheesegrater/sidecovers on right?

OK one last ask for Brokenfixed.... do you have a photo of the wiring under the seat? ideally from below and above with seat removed?

I seem to have a LOT LOL

That's probably the approach I'll take when the time comes. The stock filter has a pretty large surface area, so I don't see a problem as long as the bottom and snorks are out. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like the look of the original faux filters.

Drilling the bottom of the airbox helps a lot, but don't think it's as good as pod filters.
I've never had the pods but the calculator says I need 138
mains with a drilled 'box and 160s with dual pods,
so the pods must flow more.

youre not in the minority at all, how do you think all those freak kits got sold...haha

I bought my bike used with a cut up air box and pods and couldnt tell what was stock and what was changed for the longest time.

I've noticed that too, and it kinda surprises me. Makes me wonder if there's a flow issue due to the airbox itself, even with everything opened up. Too bad there's no option in the calculator for "airbox empty." I would have thought someone would dyno it like that.

Not sure if it's been a waste of time, at least you know what it looks like and you still have your airbox to go back to!
I took Brokenfixed's lead a long time ago and went the whole hog, removing the little tabs/brackets from the frame and all. I love the look of this mod, real raw and old school lookin'. I have my ignition orientated differently and my wiring is run a little different but still basically a great mod for these bikes.

Guess its a matter of taste, I like the open look. No need to relocate the battery, unless that's your plan. I left the rear of the stock airbox in place as a mudguard. Hey, gotta go with what works best for you

baboon, thats a nice variation. Its weird cause I thought of doing it that way originally because I was going to make custom side covers. But then while looking at it totally hallowed out with no covers I decided to leave it that way and hide as much wiring as possible under the seat.

At first I didnt want to leave the fuse block floating like I have it, but it turned out to be crucial for me. See I have cut springs and was blowing fuses when I hit really hard bumps. Leaving it floating like that allows it to absorb the shock and I havent blown a fuse since.

Toonces, you should cut those tabs off. I know....That one is a pain to cut off. The others were welded out of sight and you could bend them back and cut. But that one is right there out in the open. I hesitated on it for a bit myself.

Yeah, I meant the brackets for the sidecovers/cheesegraters. I don't think I want to re-locate the battery for now.

Personally I like the way my bike looks with the airbox removed and the battery put in it's place. I really only did it that way because I'm cheep, and 300 bucks for something I could do for less than 50 seemed... ridiculous.

I agree, the Freak kit is way over priced. I was very disappointed when I saw what I paid for. If I had it to do over I would weld up the simple brackets and buy the pods.
