Responsabilites and commitments keep me from celebrating in the traditional way these days. But, I was invited to the local pub tonight for a (treat). Couriousity got the best of me and I chocked down about a half a bottle of this stuff. Have to say after all the bragging about it that I heard I was alittle disapointed. Besides that it tasted like jeager and hairspray. Anybody know if this was the real thing? Mabey its just not what I had expected. http://www.absinthematahari.com/?q=content/absinthe-mata-hari-bohemian

I also haven't been able to celebrate the unofficial 420 holiday the past few years for various reasons. Never tried the absinthe though. It used to be illegal here, not sure if it still is or not. If it is, you probably got a very watered-down version.

That absinthe is crap. It's among the newer "novelty" absinthes which claims to have all kinds of history. If you want a serious absinthe, there's only one you need to buy...though I believe you still have to have it imported from France to Jamaica to the US. Nouvelle-Orléans. Last time I had it was about 2 or 3 years ago and after shipping, it cost around $200, but consumed traditionally, it's among the best out there.

We've had absinthe available here for about the last 10-12 years. It is one of those novelty things since the stuff that you get now only has a small percentage of wormwood, which is what made it illegal in the first place. Don't drink it and expect to get the results that you've read about from the past.

And assuming the linked Mata Hari is what the bar was serving, no wonder it tasted terrible. It's a Bohemian-style absinthe, which is not to be consumed solo, but as a wormwood bitters. It lacks the anise and other herbs which give a good absinthe it's flavor.

There's no such thing as the absinthe you read about, nor was there ever such a thing. It's all a drink of myth, created by rumors from primarily the French wine industry of the early 1900's-1910's.
Basically by that time, the demand for absinthe was 7 times higher than wine, partly due to a few poor grape harvests and the mass production of absinthe driving down prices. Once their harvests came back, the wine industry was still suffering because nobody wanted to drink wine anymore. Lets face it, absinthe had roughly 10-11 times higher abv percentage and cost less than a bottle of wine...of course no one wanted the wine anymore.
Anyways, along with the dreaded temperance movement, it was the grape/wine industry who started and perpetuated the rumors that associated absinthe with violent crimes and had it labeled as a "drug". The present chemical thujone was reported to give it psychadelic effects, but is not the case. Due to the distillation process, only an extremely small amount of thujone actually exists in the absinthe, which is far too low to have ANY effect on the human brain. In fact, a similar amount of thujone can be found in gin, due to it's presence in Juniper. In fact, current lab tests confirm that 1900s vintage absinthe only contain around 5 mg/L of thujone as opposed to the rumor of the time that it contained 300+ mg/L.
When served correctly, a quality absinthe actually has a pleasant taste...correctly diluted with water and with a small amount of sugar added.

Well Mark, I suppose almost anything tastes better when ya add sugar to it, right?! Except of course a good single malt scotch. THAT only needs three ice cubes added to it to make it "correct"! (...contrary to what some scotch "purists" might claim, of course)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I wouldn't worry about the traditional 420 celebration, in moderation. (It only happens twice a day!)
And you may see me tonight

I got caught up in the traffic caused by the Boulder, CO 420 celebration last year. The traffic going through Boulder was INSANE!!! It totally disrupted my trip up to Red Hills Motorcycle Werx. Being the naive and sheltered southern chap that I am I was totally unaware of what the heck a 420 celebration was. When I found out it made me even madder that my excursion to a fairly nice bike/biker establishment had been disrupted by a bunch of dope smoking, counter culture, hippies. The gall of that bunch!

And if none of that is available, some gas station liquor will do in a pinch
