Here it is installed, you can see the air filter and how the left side will hit the frame. Also, the cheese grater doesn't fit back over the filter

Yeah, I felt like an idiot the first time I struggled to get it on for like 5 minutes only to realize it was for the other side! And I need to clean it, too.

For those who haven't been following along, those billet intakes are not the ones that will end up being for our bikes, I will be getting the new and improved manifolds probably next week.

Okay, so even without the billet intakes, these things feel like they have more power to them. Pulls really strong through the midrange, 2500-5000 seems to really make them happy. 70-95 mph pickup in 5th gear is sick, gets there in no time! Need to get them fine tuned, and when the intakes get here get it up on the dyno. I've heard that if you can feel a difference, then thats 5hp on the dyno. I believe it! The manifolds should add some torque to the mix. So far, I'm impressed!

Hey thanks for the info and pic's Question about swirling? What part of the carb is it done on and is it a heavy cut or like a 100 grit sanding?
Thanks!

It's not that heavy, and the intake manifolds really seem to have it more pronounced than the carbs. Maybe it's the way the manifolds are cnc cut that gets it like that. If you look at the side by side pic, you can get a good idea of how much is bored out, look at the difference of where the needle goes down into the collar. That's the smallest place that can be bored out, and it's still a good amount of difference. We're only talking about millimeters here, but the flow numbers are much improved.

That boy is handy with a lathe. Nice work he does. I noticed you have some small vacuum port covers, apparently the kind made for thread covers. How do they hold up to heat? I bought some of the same when the bigger squirrel condoms were not available around here, but haven't put them to the test. I had a nightmare last night about having them melt with the resultant molten vinyl sucked into the carbs.

Yesterday I went for a long ride, and they seemed to be fine, no problems. I will probably put the original ones back on there and put those in my tool bag for just in case.

I think I finally have these set up where I like them, and it's definitely an improvement. The only thing I have to figure out is if I am keeping the Kawasaki springs in them or if I will go back to the stock springs. The stock ones may be good for the bored out carbs, as they pull more air to operate the slides anyway. More test riding to do. Still need to get to the dyno and make sure everything is jetted right, as soon as I can after the new manifolds get here.

That's an interesting question for this forum, where everyone has the same taste in "cruisers". I like the laid back seating position of the bike, and I absolutely fell in love with the look the first time I saw it. I'm no small fry, and the bike was slightly underpowered for when I ride two up. When I ride solo, I like to have as much available power as possible, so if it means doing some motor work, that's what I do. I am totally comfortable on my bike, more so than on a standard style, and I can only guess more than a crotch rocket. Being labeled a "cruiser" doesn't mean it cant have power and speed to match the fantastic handling of this beautiful and uniquely styled motorcycle.
So why did you buy one?

"Being labeled a "cruiser" doesn't mean it cant have power and speed to match the fantastic handling of this beautiful and uniquely styled motorcycle." Exactly! I have always loved to have the ability to ride hard and take the twisties with the America (and i do all the time), i guess if i bought another cruiser like the hondas or yamahas or even a harley i would either have changed to a sports bike or have at least two bikes in the garage. i am with roadworthy on this one. there is no other bike i like more and if my only gripe with this bike is power there are plenty of options out there, and even with the bigger kits its still cheaper than a new bike

I love the look of the America. I like the laid back style and like Gooseman you can take the twisties with some fun-maybe a little more fun on his 904 With the right mods she can move fast enough to scare me. I have a speed triple in the garage too, and I prefer the America over another 200+ cc's.

I'm going to do runs with and without the billet manifolds, also. See if there is a noticeable difference between the two.

I'm interested as well in both the carbs and in the higher comp pistons for the 790. Seems like a easier (and cheaper) way to get into the higher performance range without going with the BB right off the bat.

Well, I'm disappointed. I had a scheduled dyno time at a Big Dog dealer this morning at 8:30. I get there early, maybe 10 minutes after 8. Big storms coming this way today, so I was hoping to get in and out. Got rained on riding up there. Nobody there. WTF. So I call, hoping maybe the guy is inside the building. No dice. I wait around for a little over a half hour, nobody ever shows. Light rain the whole time, and I ride home. Got wet again. I'm not happy. I guess maybe he figured since nobody would take one of those 35 thousand dollar choppers out in the rain, that I wouldn't show... I don't know. I'm gonna call and give him an earful in a while.

Tell me about it. I called, and he was all like "It was raining at my house, I didn't think you would show." He was apologetic at least. Rescheduled for Tuesday morning.

So what is the latest on the new manifolds? Is he currently designing or machining out new manifolds that will fit our bikes better? Also have you heard the prices that he will be charging for this upgrade? I am anxious! I was going to go with the 39mm FCR's but now I am second guessing myself and thinking about going this route. Especially after you can post some results.

The new manifolds are on the way, he redesigned the ones he made for our bikes, when they get here we'll see if it's a perfect fit.

Red lines are my first big bore run, black are with the new bored out carbs 8 more hp! Manifolds are still to come, and I still need to get it tuned in just right for air/fuel.
