Oh geeeeeeez...not again! Articles about lane-splitting written by uninformed folks who evidently reside EAST of the friggin' Colorado River, but make their way to the more enlightened Golden State for a short visit, BUT who STILL bring their old, tired AND easily proven false ideas of "what's right", "what's rude", and "what's SAFE" with 'em while on their little sojourn out here! (I guess some, if not MOST o' you poor folks "back there" will juuuust NEVER "get this", will ya???!!!)

I do not feel anyone can talk intelligently about lane splitting, pro or con, unless they have actually done it. It's one of those things in life that if you have never experienced it, then you really don't have a clue what it is all about.

I can talk about it then, eh? intelligently? sort of. Like I wish I had narrower handlebars for one. And that it was legal in Florida, Georgia, and Maryland and Virginia. It's no fun being an illegal citizen. but I sure get there a lot faster. It also helps to have two sickles. That way after I pisss off the locals I can throw a leg over my other motorsickle and act innocent. Primary Rule: ride civil when blocks from work...or when blocks from home.

Speaking of lane splitting, I did a number on the Thruxton's tires today. Was headed back into NYC from PA this morning and traffic on I-80 right around exit 35 in NJ was backed up pretty bad, so I jumped btwn lanes as I always do.
Well, I found out why traffic was backed up. Turns out there was a rolling hot patch job going on. They were just laying down some hot asphault and moving on...not really closing down lanes but going along at 5mph filling a gap that had formed between two of the lanes (just so happened to be the lanes I was splitting). Well, that patching musta been pipin' hot, as those skinny Thruxton Pirelli's sunk into the asphault, flinging hot asphault all over the place...cars beside me weren't too happy!
I got out ahead of all the traffic after a mile or 2 of splitting and stood up on my pegs to take a glance at my front tire...the rubber was shredded with gravel all stuck into the semi melted rubber. Oops...once I got into the city, it looked like I simulated about 2000 miles of tire wear in 100 feet!
