Anybody have a suggestion as to what would be a good set of basic tools or spare parts to keep in the saddle bags for long trips...just in case.

Leatherman tool
Duct tape
cell phone

If you can't fix it with the leatherman and/or duct tape, it's more than can be reasonably fixed on the side of the road so you will need the cell phone to call for a tow

Cheers,
Brad

The only real, necessary, emergency part would be an oil filter.
It's unlikely, but possible you could spring a
leak from a nasty rock or bit of scrap metal.
And of course it would only happen in the middle of nowhere.

This one goes for around $70 if you hunt for it a bit. By leaving out the SAE stuff, (at least half of what's shown) the rest would fit in the bottom of saddle bag without taking up much room.

I carry the full kit in my pickup -- very handy to have on board.

A spare clutch lever could help if you drop your bike and it snaps off.

A cell phone is probably your best friend. That being said, a tire plug kit and mini air compressor could be a big help. www.aerostich.com

I pack a crescent, vise grips, allen pack, and aparently a few people even pack a chain tool with links (good idea I guess). I need to get a larger tool bag that sits on the forks because I'd like to just have a whole set of sockets, ratchet, and extensions to boot.
