Anyone want to chime in on exhaust wrap. Specifically the best way to go about it(pitfalls). Was thinking about doing it to my 04 speedmaster. Also any pics from members who have done it would be greatly appreciated.

No pitfalls detected yet. Except that i need to repaint them. For some reason, the wrap has begun losing its original (black) color. I'm still diggin' it though.

Looking good. Have any problems with the shielding next to the foot pedals? I was thinking about removing it from mine so I could wrap directly over the header.

I was no problem wrapping over it. I just noticed that in the 1st pic it looks like the shifter is really close to the header, but it isn't.

I wrapped these in 05, the only problem I've had is the wrap is starting to fade. When I wrapped them I soaked the wrap in water, then looped around the leg of a steel bench to get the wrap tight. Good Luck

Thanks for the pics guys they all look great. Definetly think I'm gonna do this project. Anyone use the copper stuff? I'm leaning towards it right now and was wondering if it looks good with red. Also is there a special way to cut the wrap so that the ends don't frey?

I bought 2" wide x 50' roll and had lots left over. Probably used around 25 feet of it.

I prefer the 1" stuff. Over the relatively small area we have to cover on our exhausts I think the smaller stuff with more wraps looks better. But that's just my preference.

I was thinking about the one inch stuff myself. What length would you say the one inch requires?

It depends on how much you want to do. If you're gonna take the header and go all the way from where the headers meet up with the pipes then you'll need 2 50' rolls. You'll have left overs but it's better than not having enough. If you don't want to take the headers off and just go from the foot rests up then 1 50' roll will do you just fine.

Can you get this stuff at an auto parts store? Or better to look online?

I got mine at the local performance auto-1 store. They had the 2" x 50' black wrap, silicon spray in black, and S.S.ties, all in stock. Can't remember the price, it was too long ago, but it was equall to the wrap sold on line, after figuring in S&H.

silicon spray in black,
I wish I had used it, it seals the wrap color to reduce fading. I got mine online from Summit racing.

Absolutely! Seals, and keeps clean, and touch ups keep that new look. The salesperson said everybody needs the silicon spray with the wrap. (hence: salesperson)

oops, click on the thingy at the bottom of my post for pics, the copper plated thingy is a pasta can the wife had on the counter that held pasta. I made this cool little mini beer keg fake oil can that held all the electrics, battery and ignition. Put many hours of work in that pos and did not take into account lowering the bike and clearance issues, anywho the chain ate it and it was time to ride so I poured the pasta out of this thing, made a couple of brackets and its been ther ever since. Still says Pasta on it.

Another threadjack... Doesn't silicone spray stink or smoke/burn off from the heat? I need to doll mine up due to fading and was originally gonna go with flat grill paint. I'm interested in this silicone spray now. I checked at a couple parts stores on the way home, but no one has heard of it.

$18 for a can of high-temp paint? I'd try header paint first.

Mine was purchased with the D.E.I. header wrap. Can says "D.E.I., Hi-temp silicone coating. 1500 degree protection. SEALS AND PROTECTS EXHAUST WRAPS." I paid around $10.00 for a 12 ounce can. Oh yes, it does smoke for the first 5-10 minutes. But I only do touch up every 2-3,000 miles after the original treatment.

Guess I should have clicked on the eBay link first, man I'm slow lately. But, if you find it locally, it's ten bucks.

I got high temp engine paint for like 5 bucks a can at an autozone type place. Duplicolor I believe.
I'll look around for the wrap, thanks guys! I already have some SS zip ties.

OK so follow up question...
Who did it on the bike and who removed the headers? I'm thinking you'd have to remove them....

Thanks guys. Anyone else? I'm thinking it might be hard to get a good tight wrap towards the bottom...
Also did you guys replace the gaskets at that time? Or just pop em back on?

I just used a little dab of hi-temp rtv and popped 'em back on. You can also heat 'em up with a torch (anneal), then re-use them.

Did mine on the bike, worked fine. ScottS: Dude! I dig the bike. Nice! Question, though: how you like those super-short pipes? Any performance changes? I have martini shakers on mine (pic below), but I've been worried that they're too short to provide enough backpressure... or maybe not, I dunno. Also, how loud are they? Are there ANY baffles in those? Looks awesome, though. (P.S. -- sorry about the pic size.) --Jaeger
