I am curious as to what kind of rpm everyone is running at highway speeds that you feel you need an extra gear?
Out tonight with rpms at 5k in 4th gear i was doing about 75mph & when I switch to 5th gear im rolling at 90mph.
Thats with a stock SM sprockets

More about the feel to reach for another gear that people "feel". Not really about what the bike can do with stock sprockets of 16 or 17. Just when you run through the gears and you "feel" like you need to shift again. Does the bike need it? No. Are there some advantages to using a taller gear? Yes.

I tend to ride mine between 5.5k to 7.5k (limiter) she purrrrs at those revs, Im just getting into 5th at 90 - 100  maybe I need to slow down LOL

Yes, I realized what I said just after I posted and logged... (duh) I just saw many discussions about speedo being off and my thought jumped to needing speedo calibration since so many mentioned they observe their's is off with "stock" wheels and "better" with larger wheels... is there an adjustment, or do you just need to know how much you are off and just compensate...

I compensated by putting on a larger front tire.
If you're so worried about it, SLOW DOWN!
When the young NY State Trooper asked me why he pulled me over,
I should of said: "I thought you wanted a better look at my Triumph".
I was just glad he didn't look in my pockets.
He was nice enough to write me up for 73. I was doing every bit of 97.

A few years ago on our way to the NY rally, Snert and I checked this out. He has the larger front wheel on his bike. I was leading and doing 5 mph over the posted limit. His speedo indicated the posted limit. This was on 45/55 mph roads. There is no speedo adjustment to correct this. The general consensus over the years has been that our speedos are off around 8-10 mph at any speed over 40.... So doing 5-10 over puts you in the ballpark. I'm running an 18/41 sprocket combo btw, and it works for me. I have yet to see a 115 mph road around here.

If I'm going anywhere that isn't just around the neighborhood, I use my GPS for my speedo.

Don't shimano do a front deraillier... I'm sure with the technical knowledge here we can design an adaption... Lever on handlebars with hi - lo. Like my 4x4...

Like a 1983 CB1000 Custom Honda. Too bad the V-4 replaced it but progress must happen I guess. You know water cooling, self adjusting valves all came in 25 years ago. It does exactly that. Kick it down its 2 teeth taller, kick it up its for low end torque. Not that it needs it. Does 115 MPH in 3rd and will burn rubber out of the hole.

I don't know why my post is missing, I tried the 19T front and it took way too much grunt away riding solo, so I would imagine way too much 2 up. I still have the barely used 19 hanging on the wall in the shed.

I've ride with a 19t about half the time, and half of that time is two-up.
Runs fine, no issues. I live in Orlando, so there's no real grade (elev.) changes.
I'm 210 lbs, 380 lbs (+/-) when two up.
My bike is pretty light though, and I seldom have luggage. So total weight, fully loaded, is always under 900 lbs.
FWIW, the OTHER half of the time it has a 16t.
Changing from 16 to 19 ONLY involves changing the gear (duh), and re-adjusting the axle position, nothing else.

I tried the 17/42 combo on the Beasty 2 up not to bad at all.....put the little camp trailer on the back and oh yuck when towing i run the 16/44 combo

I ride two up with 19 tooth our weight totals 310-315 lbs. (22.5 stone)  It pulls fine enough but still has the top end. What does that trailer weigh the way it sits?

About #360 here (combined weight) and 19T works fine. I switch back to the 17T if I take the bike to NC. Maybe this will be the year I just go with an 18T. I do lose a little top end with the 19, but I'm pushing a barn door of a windscreen and that's probably the bigger reason.
