As some of you know, I dabble in bodybuilding. I have been a devout muscle head for about 6 years now and recently started to realize the toll it was taking on my joints. So I decided to go a different way. I just started MMA and never new how out of shape I was. Within the first minute I wanted to puke. 10 minutes later I couldn't breath at all. My knees are shot, I need surgery on both, but I can't wait to go back. If you want to challenge yourself, give it a try. After an hour of boxing, cardio, and abs, we finished with 50 squats, 50 pushups, 50 situps. Like I said my knees are shot so I had to pass on the squats after about 70 but I'm not quitting.
pain is temporary, pride is forever.

I used to box in my teens as you said a bit of fitness freak, spending hours in the gym. My kness are shot at with lifting weights etc.
I now relax in front of the telly or puter, maybe should get of my backside and start doing something again..

What is MMA?
Modified Motorcycle Association?
Oh no, wait. It is also a variation of boxing where kicking and clinching are allowed.

No offense, but that's the problem with body building sans the atheletic pursute. I've noticed many young builders work on their upper body, but have no legs or ****** and move akwardly.

I took a highly condensed course back in '62. They didn't have a name for it but I guess that it would fall under the realm of MMA. I do know that the little Okinawan Sensei was without a doubt the baddest man I ever met.
Yes! I am a Redneck. Any Problems?

bad hinges? lots of vitamin E, MSM, Glucosimine & /or condriodin. Ice is your friend, as is beer. I can't wait for this stem cell thing to take off, shoot some juice in me & my cartilage will grow back!

Yeah, I did a little boxing in my yute, as well as some team sports. Boxing and water polo training were by far the most strenuous. Some of my buds were into karate and/or jujitsu, they used to run barefoot on gravel for miles . I lift too. With a bum knee (60% of ACL gone with associated meniscus damage nine years ago) form is especially critical, keep calf perpendicular to floor when squatting or doing lunges. I credit the weight training with keeping my flexibility as long as I have. Well developed hamstrings help compensate for the deficient ACL. The surgeon who put it back together gave me ten years until a steel and plastic knee. Nine years now and even though there's some pain sometimes, it's usually tolerable. Have to wear the CTi2 for a while occasionally. MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin, vitamins, minerals, omega3s, protein supplements etc. . Sometimes I overtrain a bit and get a little tendonitis (like now where the pectorals attach to the humerus, too many pushups ) so just have to rest/ice the area for a couple weeks and then get right back into it. So anyway, enjoy your training

They're not builders, just trying to grow some "bar muscles", you know the kind where they can look in the mirror and flex.
I see them in the gym, always young guys. They usually get hurt and quit because their form sucks.
But sometimes they wise up. One kid asked me how I grew my arms, that was all he cared about. Wanted "big guns" (BTW, I'm 54 years old). I'd seen this kid standing up "curling" with 60 lb dums. He would swing them back and throw them up using his whole body, except not much bicep. And that's all he ever did. No back, no shoulders, no tricep, no legs, no core etc. etc. I gave him a few pointers about form and total body and introduced him to a trainer. Hope he listens.

There was a time long ago when I worked out. I used to wrestle and took 4th in regionals, still have the medal. I also took karate when I had nothing better to do except play cards read or watch TV, involuntary vacation Now I watch TV and play on the computer when I'm not playing with my bikes or outside doing something. Not in the shape I used to be and have somewhat of a gut now.
