I too am a proud union Carpenter, local 1532 Mt.Vernon,Wa...I some how found myself working for a large pipeing company 20 some years ago.I hardly ever get to work with the tools anymore but I've worked with some of the best all over the western U.S. It saddens me to see the decline in true craftsmen. This trade has allowed me to raise 4 great kids,Restore & rebuild a 100 year home, dabble in building a hotrod, time to enjoy my America[the blue & white ones are the fastest, don't let anyone tell ya different] & in 5 years give me a pension to do all the above full time.Thats something the non-union guys forget to tell you when they beat their non-union drum......end of rant LETS RIDE!!

paper route. worked for a liquor store when I was 15...for a week. clerk to manager for Sav-On drugs from about ages 16 to 22. alarm installer for car dealers when I was 23. short stint in construction and for Sams club at about 23/24. for teh last 14 years I have worked for a littel company called Best Buy. I started as a car audio tech (4 years) and am now what called an RFT (Retail Functinality Trainer). There are only 44 of us but when I started there were less than 20. The title means little...the job is extensive. Here are some of the things I do: Overall electronic display functinoality support for 15 (used to be 35) stores. This means I know how it works and I help retail make it work. I order all repair parts and manage the return process for said parts for all stores. I am a trainer on many levels....I have trained adn promoted five people in four years. I teach technical knowledge anywhere from a one on one basis to a class room style. I teach the technology that drives our business...audio, video, digital imaging, etc... I am responsible for the support of new store openings and the teams that open those stores as well as the teams that do all of our special projects. I am responsible for the upkeep of all store video systems both internal and external. I am overall the go to guy when no one else has the answer no matter what the need is.
You could say I have one of those jobs that no one trains for but everyone wants. I racked up 280,000 miles on my truck in 8 years...I earned 240,000 Alaska miles my first two years and only spent 6 weeks in my apartment the first year. Things have mellowed out since then but I tell you...I love my job!

Bottle Boy at a neighborhood market 14-18 did this until I moved away from home. Fast food guy for one week when I was 16 Worked in a Nursing Home Kitchen, Dishwasher/Server 17-18 during the summers I would work at a cabinet factory doing grunt work, cleaning the roofs, vacuuming the walls, etc... Worked at G.I. Joes (Sporting Goods)18 while forgetting to go to classes at college in Portland (can you say party?). Went back to the home town, and worked in a cabinet factory on the finishing line for a couple of years. My Dad was the supervisor.19-21 Went off to Eugene and worked in the stock room at The Limited (Womens clothing)at night and as a prep-cook on the weekends at a Mexican Restaurant called Nacho's. I went to college part time during the episode too. During the summer took a job in Santa Cruz, CA working at the boardwalk as a ride operator (carnie), and left after the big earthquake in '89. Went back to Eugene and worked the same two jobs again. Went off to Seattle in '91 worked in a used clothing store (I loved that job)in a cool part of town. Later that year, I went back to Eugene and the same two jobs again and then quit them both to work in a coffee shop. I was a barista until '93 went to Portland, and worked for the Evil Empire as a barista and an assistant manager. I hated working for them so I took off for Sacramento, and worked in a coffee shop there too. In the spring of 1994. Decided one day to take a look at the Mortuary School in San Francisco, two weeks later I was living and working in a Funeral Home in the Mission District. I was there until I graduated in 1995. (All that part-time going to college had helped). Moved back to Portland, and couldn't find a job. They only wanted to hire people from the local mortuary school. I did a lot of temp. work for a couple of years, and ended up working for the State Retirement system. Stayed with them for nearly four years and by accident found an apprenticeship in a a Funeral Home. I was a Funeral Director/Embalmer for four years and realized, I hated corporation I was working for, totally unethical as far as I was concerned. I went part-time and went back to University and then found a great job allowing me to go to school and do what I was studying (Marketing/Communications)at Freightliner. I swore I would never work in the Funeral Industry again. (Never Swear). I got laid off right after graduation, and was offered a job working at another Funeral Home. The pay was way better, they were ethical and actually quite fun people to work with. And so here I am now, taking care of all of the people that don't make it when StretcherMonkey forgets to turn the petcock the right way on their IV. Being a mortician would be great if it were only the dead people I had to work with. They never complain. -Brent

Right out of high school I went to welding school then hired on with Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. doing heavy equipment repair. Then a string of welding jobs, pipe welding, sheet metal shop, heli-arc, fleet maintenance garage. Then started my second career with the Post Office, operating high speed letter sorting machinery, then supervising the same operation. Got tired of working nights and moved to being a mailman, did that for 15 years. Last couple of years I'm doing maintenance work inside a delivery post office. It's indoors, easy on my old bones, and God willin' my last move.

Retiring in August...
Egad, I shudder to think about my retirement. Maybe this deserves its own thread, but I have been prone to spur of the moment road trips that were measured in months rather than miles. Go to work one day, and the next morning was out in the saddle in the wind. Left several good positions on a whim, and now to be 50 in this economy with a work history full of rather long unexplainable gaps... Heck the only reason I have been in Dallas a full 5 years is that its the longest time I have ever been without a bike.
Worse (?) part is I will prolly do it at least once more before my ride here is finished. Am I the only one here who refused to settle down?

"Rendering plant gofer"... That reminds me of a story. Many years ago a few bays of our shop were used for over-the-road truck engine maintenance. One of our best and brightest truck service salesmen (?) got a contract signed with a rendering plant to service all of their "tallow" trucks - tandem dump trucks. Back then, they didn't bother to clean them or even empty them before they brought them in for service. We always had them parked as far away from the shop as possible which confused one of our type A personality, highly educated, management trainees. He asked why no one wanted to work on them.... Louie, one of our best truck mechanics offered to "explain" it to him. He pushed a wheeled maintenace stand out to the side of the truck and invited Mr. Wizard to have a look in the bed. Mr. Wizard wasn't ready for all of the things looking back at him and puked for about an hour before he took the rest of the day off..... I love a good reality check...

Geez, I had to really think about it; starting at 12 years old: Groundskeeper at the Army post ball field in Nelligan, Germany; skeet range "boy" loading clay targets and reloading shotgun shells at the Army post in Leavenworth, KS; paper boy (Philadelphia Inquirer) in Willingboro, NJ; US Coast Guard (briefly, as a cadet for 2 years at the academy in New London); janitor, garden shop laborer, beer store manager and finally quality control inspector at the PX (Hickam AFB, Honolulu, Hawaii); stage hand, head mechanic and shop manager at a Kawasaki dealership, radio DJ, radio station manager, assistant technical services manager at the University of South Carolina (all in Columbia, SC); sound engineer, then chief engineer, then VP for Audio Unlimited in Greensboro, NC; front-of-house sound engineer, then stage manger/master carpenter and finally backline/instrument tech (roadie) for 26 years for country music's "supergroup" Alabama (at my current domestic location in Fort Payne, AL).
I retired last July to concentrate on riding my bikes but economic stresses put me back to work. These days I'm the backline/instrument roadie for Wynonna (Judd). I do some studio recording engineering for local bands and singers as well as production management for a few local festivals when the weather's nice.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Retired airline employee. Presently, and while I make NO income from this "living" at the moment mind you, one can regularly find me sitting on my duff at this computer's keyboard in continual and ongoing attempts to find, located within a certain particular motorcycle-themed website, posted comments from other members of said website which I feel might possess what I call "potential" in which to add "humorous" comments by often utilizing the means of metaphoric phraseology and obscure historical references. In other words...I supply much of the "BS" to be found within this particular website. (but yeah, I suppose THAT really ISN'T much of a "living" nowdays, IS it?!)
