Well it's been a couple of months, and I'm wondering if any of you have perfected these lowering setups yet. The existing ones look a bit dodgy to me, and I see them as a weak link.

this has always been an ongoing debate on which lowering method is better because every option has its ups and downs. I think brackets are dodgy and I have cut springs. Other guys think cut springs are dodgy and they prefer buying new shocks.
Choice is yours. If you want your bike a little lower, buy the shocks if you have the money. If you want it really low, youre gonna need those shocks pretty stiff to avoid rubbing the tire. If you have them that stiff, than whats the point of buying new shocks? Might as well chop the springs and stick em on stiff.

Yeah, I've decided to go with 11.5" progressive 812 shocks. That way I get the slightly lowered look I'm after, with quality suspension. I've given up on the idea of the lowering blocks with their appealing angle.

Live long enough and your rear will lower on its own (sorry, I just couldn't help it).

well the blocks are made to fit our size shocks and so are the 412's, so they should "FIT"...."work"? is a broad term cause Im guessing the blocks lower the rear around 2" and the 1" shorter shocks would make it 3" which I dont think leaves enough room for the tire to move up and down. And the shocks are 1" lower based on the stock geometry but when you change the geometry of the shock angle with the lowering blocks 1" could mean something different. And then of course you figure that being that low would cause a need to have the shocks on the hardest setting to avoid rubbing your tire, and if theyre that hard then whats the point of having premium shocks? Not to mention the fact that those blocks change the angle putting more upward pressure on the side of the shock not the bottom, which would most likely bend the piston/rod of the expensive aftermarket shock.
Theres a lot to mull over. If you want it low youre gonna want it to ride like a pickup truck. I have cut springs on the hardest setting to prevent rubbing with around 2"+ overall lowering. It rides like a hardtail with a little bounce.

Not to mention that from the shots I have seen the bottom portion of the stock shocks just misses the lowering block so if those are any fatter on the bottom they would probably hit the blocks.

The brackets will lower you 2 1/2 ".....They do stick out a bit. There is a way around this and that is to move the stock brake caliper around to the bottom side of the swing arm then you could fab something up so they do not have to stick out.... I must say you do not wanna go below 3" I had the brackets and then i went with a 1/2" smaller tire....This thing is low and i drag when i tear up the twisties....or atleast i did before i totalled the bike

damien - what did you use to drop it 3"? shocks, brackets, a combo of both? it looks like you're running with the stock seat. Quote:
