Oh yeah. There is something in that photo that I believe has a very strong back. Just a "little" hint.

Wow, that tank is w-i-d-e. The gallery view looking down from above really accentuates it.

Maybe that was done because the twin cylinders are so wide.

That's what I'd guess, Kevin. And maybe to hold enough gas, seeing as how it probably has to have a wider underneath tunnel for the fuel pump, just like the latest EFI-equiped Bonnies, BAs and Speedmasters have to have.

The pair in the back since seems the pair in the front are after market.

Your choice Dwight. Of course in light of some of the radical conversions coming out of Sweden, I make it a point to insist on all original equipment.

Nah, Leno. I was givin' the ol' "thumbs up" to Ian for his "after market" joke.

I agree with ya. Most of THOSE kinds of "after market jobs" just look a little too "customized" for my tastes too!

It's kind'a like how I feel about those big monsterous 250 and larger rear tires they're puttin' on some of these bikes today...total overkill and for effect only, and actually makes 'em harder to handle!

(I'm talkin' motorcycles here again, you understand...but come to THINK of it.....!)

A bit of trivia is that both silicon and saline after market headlights sink while OEM equipment can be used as floatation devices.

(I saw this on Manswers a TV show dedicated to man answers. They tested all 3 and the OEM ones really do float where as the others don't!)

The Thunderbird is 174 LBS heaver, only 24 more HP's, 3 " shorter, 2" shorter wheel base, and only .7 gallon more tank capacity than our Americas and Speedmasters. Hmmmmm. I'm keeping my Speedy folks. I do think the bike will sell with all the guys that can't get off their + 1500cc fetish.

No way will this be competitive with the likes of HD. Very few potential new buyers looking for a large, built-in-the-West cruiser will find the new 'Bird of significant interest. And how will Triumph entice rice riders to pay so much more for a bike with no additional performance, a smaller dealer network and less visibility? The BA/Speedy is such a winning design, it trumps all those deficits. Somehow, somewhere in the corporate ego, Triumph lost the forumla to that particular success. Too bad, the failing economy is not going to be forgiving of mistakes like this.

I am having a hard time with the weight of this thing, just does not seem right. It is heavier than the R3 by one pound (745 lbs with fuel) to and where is it coming from? The R3 is monstrous in comparison. Just seems that the weight is off?

MCN has the dry weight of Thunderbird 276kg and ours is 226kg I think. 50 kg difference 110 lb.

I always thought(for the most part)that 1200cc-1600cc bikes were over rated when you factor the weight to HP ratio. The price is the X-factor here. Can't wait to see how much this thing cost.

That would be 641 pounds wet and 607 dry. Ours 497 dry and 525 wet.

But the 746 wet is based on the above data. Still a lot of difference. But how is it that it is so close to the R3 in the above specs?

I just have to think there is a wrong set of figures out there as there is 100 differe4nce between MSN and where this spec chart came from.

That's in the region of what I'm still hearing (278-288kg), despite what the site states.

Well on the upside IF it is the same as the R3, I was duly impressed with how well that bike handled for a bruiser. It was pretty nimble in the corners when I had a go at it.

Eeh! Hang in there, Keith! REMEMBER....NOT ALL of the "Pro-Fin Crowd" around here have such a negative overall assessment about the new T-Bird as SOME of these folks around here seem to hold!!!

Just in case there are some misconceptions I'm not in the Thunderbird bashing crowd. I do think it is a good looking bike with some nice features(like optional antilock brakes, six speed gear box, and fuel gage) but I don't think I could justify the cost. It's still a better option than a Harley big twin. Well hopefully.

Using the factory specs, dry weight the horsepower to weight ratio is about 1:8 for BOTH the Speedmaster and T-BIRD.

However the torque to weight is 1:11 for the SM, 1:6 for the T-bird.
That will make a significant difference in performance.

Not to mention that the SM/America torque peaks at 44.3 ft. lbs. at 3500 rpm.

The T-bird peaks at 107.7 ft. lbs. at 2750 rpm.

Add belt drive, fuel injection, water cooled, twice the cc, and I have to tell you telling people my bike is only a 790cc, people laugh. (Mainly cause they don't know any better.) I don't know about you guys, but I really like this bike. It looks great. It's as if Triumph was listening to this forum. Seeing all the aftermarket changes we were doing such as bobbing the fenders, BB kits, air box removal, larger front rims, and louder exhaust. They said wait a minute guys... here, 'Thunderbird'.

The T-bird peaks at 107.7 ft. lbs. at 2750 rpm.

I'd like to see a dyno on the torque & HP ratings.

I do think it is a good looking bike with some nice features(like optional antilock brakes, six speed gear box, and fuel gage) but I don't think I could justify the cost.

Yeh I forgot about the belt drive. The water cooled doesn’t concern me too much. As for the knuckle heads laughing about any bike under 1000cc's I never gave a frigg what fools think anyway.
