I think you will find the stealers do not use mobil 1 in the UK either. I get mine from a local guy who is retired from the oil business, but cannot remember what it is. I have a gallon in the garage so will look tomorrow before I go to the local meet in the morning and let you know. I do know it cost me £16.75..
OK went into the garage to look it is ELF 4T - 4HP ECO Synthetic foritfied 10w - 40 for motorcycles

Never seen Amsoil over here, I have not had to change the oil in my America yet but will be using Silkolene semi synthetic or Castrol semi synthetic. for bike engines of course.

I used Castrol Power GPS 4T last time. Pretty expensive, around £30 for 4L I think. Haven't heard of any Amsoil dealers over here either.

Can I ask why semi-synthetic, not fully synthetic? Is there a difference in performance? I thought fully would be better than semi?

I use semi synthetic for a few reasons.
I dont do enough miles in a year to reach the service interval of 6000, but I do change my oil/filter every year, when I do change it, it comes out still pretty clean. Its a bit cheaper than fully also. It is not recomended to use fully synthetic untill the engine is fully run in, that can be quite a distance, on my old BMWs it was said to be at leasy 10,000miles. I have herd that using fully synthetic could make the oil seals harden up, where as mineral oil keeps them soft, but they probably have additives now to prevent this. Our engines are not exactly high reving. Semi is good enough for me, but did you know that the term semi synthetic is decieving you may think it is 50% mineral 50% synthetic. in actual fact the synthetic part may only be 5%.

I've heard fully synthetic is better for lubrication but not as good at capturing the 'shrapnel' They reckon semi synthetic probably gives best of both?

cheers for all the info,im using motul 5100 10w40 and ive used it in all me other bikes but seems to make the engine a bit tappy, but that could just be my ears as i did spend 23 years as a car tech and you hear things you really dont want to,and yes you can buy amsoil over here from opie oils in cornwall but it works out to be about £70 for 4litres a wee bit to exspencive for me.cheers again steve

I use the cheapest I can find, and have since the early 70's, usualy Comma, your only paying for the name. I was told many years ago, from someone in the buisness that most oil distributers source from the same place, so you get the same oil, different name. Never had an engine seize or wear dramatically, as long as it's regularly changed. But what do I know

Think about how often those bikes needed to have top ends done and even bottom ends compared to these bikes running full syn. Think I'll stick with the good stuff.

As with anything, you use whats best suited. But you shop around. Unfortunatly there's always a number of people that seem clueless, when you ask them why somethings broke or dos'nt work, there simple answer is "did'nt know you had to do that", when i've talked to people with seized or rattely engines and asked them when they did an oil change, it ranges from never to three or four years. Liken an engine to a heart, keep its arteries clean and clear, checked regularly and it'll last a lifetime. Regardless of how cheap or expensive an oil is, proper regular oil changes are essential, even the good stuff turns to crap eventually.

I wasn't speaking to cost I was speaking to quality. You can't use the "it all comes out of the ground" argument anymore. Full syn. is just that, synthetic. In friction tests there are 2 oils that stand out way above the rest. Those being Amsoil and the oil that Triumph sells. You do what you can or want to with your bike but in the synthetic world there are better oils than others. If you want to run crisco it makes no difference to me, my bike will still be running.

Never had a problem really with the castrol GPS power 4T.
It works fine on the daytona as well as the speedy.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

I have wondered about that new Castrol full syn. they just started to advertise. I always used Castrol in all my old bikes and my trucks. I would like to see the new syn. included in a friction test.

My dealer did use Silkolene but they've gone over to another brand since my last service. Currently, I'm using Rock Oil Guardian (semi-synth. £24 for 4 litres) Only time will tell if it's any good.
I use supermarket's own brand (£6-8 for 4 litres) in my car ('96 AX diesel) but change it every 4k miles or so. I'm of the opinion that frequent changes go a lot more towards engine longevity than special formulaes.

The mobil debate....
My dealer down here doesn't sell it and the dealer by my parents doesn't either.
Dunno what they sell down here - I tend to take the bike in for a service every 4000 miles.... bone idle I know, but don't have the facilities. The 03 get it's done at my parents as my dad has a garage, and the dealer up there sells motul. And it's the nearest place to them to get oil from.
Me dad swears by Silkolene, as it used to be the only oil recommended by Rolls Royce, but since they decided the factory in Derbyshire was surplus to requirements and put a lot of people out of work..... though I still use their chain lube.
Gina
03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....
