Ok guys so what bikes would you expect to have depreciated the most in the last year. Some interesting figures...some will come as no real surprise even in these resession hit times. So to those who bought Triumph Americas once again it shows just how smart we really are. These are UK figures mind you.

The article states the the Duc 1098 Tri-color was the best investment. But the America and BMW depreciated less than the Duc in the table provided.

Maybe the Ducati had a higher base price? Still making it worth more after depreciation? I don't know, but I have never bought a vehicle thinking I was going to make money off of it.

I don't think this report is attempting to say one brand depreciated more or less than another.

I agree, I think it is just showing a couple different brands and what their best and worst depreciating bikes were. ie. Ducati's best was the 1098, and their worst was the 749 Dark. Honda's best was the 1800 VTX and worst was the VTR 1000 F-4. Triumph's best was the America and worst was the Daytona 955I, and so on. The only problem with this that I noted right off the bat was they haven't made a Daytona 955 for a couple years have they? They went to the 1050. Still sounds good looking at those numbers for the America's!!

I think it's another example of a news writer who can't read. The entire article is highly suspect, including the table. Where's HD? Didn't they sell enough to make the list?

Does that mean we can stop paying taxes and any other payments? I mean screw the credit cards if the world is gonna end. Who is gonna care about credit scores after that?

I totally agree and have never looked at my vehicles as investments (lots of personal use-yes, resale-no). If you're going to buy it, ride it! If you're not going to ride it, why bother? Looking and daydreaming is always free.

With a depreciation of 20% +/- per year, I should be able to get a new Thunderbird by 2015.

That's certainly true alright, Ivan!

One of my buds here in L.A. has a three-car garage full of classic bikes, about a dozen in total, which basically span the years of manufacture from 1954 to 1979. Most were originally purchased by him within the last dozen years, and the average purchase of each bike in his collection was probably around $5000.00.

Among them (which BTW were in 95 to 98 point condition when he purchased them, based on classic motorcycle show competition criteria, and are all now restored to near 100 point condition) are a 1969 Triumph Bonneville, a 1969 BSA Rocket III, a 1975 Norton Commando, a 1970 Honda CB750, a 1974 Kawasaki Z1 900, a 1974 Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, a 1979 Honda CBX, a 1954 Harley FLH(this one being the the exception as to that "average purchase price of $5000.00...I think it cost him about $13,000, 5 years ago)....BUT, the point here IS that each of those beautiful machines he owns are now probably worth somewhere between 150% to maybe even more than 200% of his original purchase price for them.

Wish I had some of those crated-in-grease WWII Harleys that were for sale when I was a kid. I seem to remember them being offered for $300-400 each.

My 39 year old car, is worth more now than when it was made (up 200%). It is a base model in original condition of one of Australia's classic car's, the Ford Falcon GT HO Phase 3. Our bikes are in the same league as my old car. My bike is there to enjoy and in time they will be worth more as a great reliable classic. I wish to get 39yrs of ownership of my ride.

No. Spending at risk money on these things did! Spending on something you can't afford will get you in trouble.
If you have disposable cash, and the value of what you purchase goes down, well it's paid for and you keep it.

Guys PAY CASH FOR EVERYTHING.

Or you could barter - like when I got an 1100 Gold Wing for my second wife. Good trade, right?

Good trade for sure... from what I understand you can put some serious miles on those bikes without too much maintenance!

Outstanding! Just imagine you pitching up at the dealers with the wife. Bit of form filling then salesman hands you set of keys, you say goodbyes to your wife then ride off on your new bike free as a bird (on every level).
