my niece in OKC just had a baby on Monday. I just found out that her car won't go over 40 mph. She says that it runs rough or stalls if you put your foot into it.
Sounds like junk in the tank and a clogged fuel filter to me.
What am I'm I missing? Thoughts? Tranny vacuum line? I wish I was out there to help them out.
anyone??

Mass Airflow Sensors are notorious for failing on those cars. That'll cause those symptoms. They aren't exactly cheap either. Best i recall they are @ $200.00+

The catalytic converter will not cause a stall. It will just keep the engine from revving as high as it should (if it will start). If the catalytic converter is plugged, you can mash the accelerator pedal to the floor (in park or neutral) and hold it there, and the engine will not rev over 2500-3000 RPM typically.

Was it a sudden problem or over time? I understand what Rob is saying too, and he's probably right, being a mechanic and all. I had a car with a clogged converter once, it wouldn't go over 10 mph until I cut it out.

Ding ding ding! this sounds like the problem. I'll call the info in. Thanks Rob and everyone else.

Converter was my first thought as well but just for the heck of it look in the end of the tail pipe incase she might have backed into a bank or something and clogged it with mud.

If she backed into a bank, wouldn't it be clogged with dollars?

Try cracking the flange in front of the cat to create an exhaust leak. The car should rev up and go faster then 40 if it's the cat. If the cat was clogged it would most likely be worse as it got hot. I'd be looking at the mass air flow meter.
