Well, in THAT case Ian...can you just imagine how much better lookin' that "blank white space" would be if IT had you-know-whats TOO??????  Ya see fellas, the WHOLE IDEA here is that FINS would tend to give almost ANYTHING, like EVEN "little Xs" AND EVEN "blank white spaces" a little more VISUAL INTEREST, and a little less bland looking! (come on...don't fight it...you guys KNOW I'm right!)
