I have expressed an interest at my main dealer,(Test ride) but I will not buy one for at least a year util they sort all the problems out. You are all saying what problems, there will be problems just like the R3 had when that rolled off the production line and the America..

Might as well make it TriumphCruisers.com. That would include Americas, Speedmasters, Thunderbirds, and Rockets. The main drawback is that the America and Speedmaster are basically the same bikes, engines, etc. The other two would stretch the scope quite a bit.

Who needs a new clubhouse? Never said I was getting rid of the America. The new clubhouse is already up though: Thunderbird1600.com. Juast another place to play.
As for problems, yep, understand and am violating one of my own personal rules. But dangit, I want this one. I am just gonna hope the bugs that need a little massaging aren't that big. If they are, well, I'll still have Mrs. Robinson.
Edit: Oh yeah, I did sign and fill out the form and leave the deposit today. Blue/White w/ ABS - #1 on the list. I was told 2 others are right behind me. Stupid unpopular bike with no appeal whatsoever I tell ya'.

What problems did the America initially have? It wasn't a new engine as it came from the Bonneville classics. I didn't know of any real problem the first year. Any 02 owners want to speak up?

Only problem I ever had was my speedo cable broke because it was not apparently lubed well enough at the factory. Nothing other than not knowing at the time to remove the AI. I guess I have bought a new 1st year model before. Never really thought about that as I just saw the BA and had to have it and figured the motor had been on the Bonnies up to that point. Maybe this old dog is learning new tricks.

30,000+ miles on my 02 TBA. A broken cable loop the first year and one igntion coil last year. That's it. My personal Triumph mechanic, Donny, keeps it running strong. I'd like to at least sit on the new Thunderbird before putting any money down, to see if it fits.

The speedo loop was still breaking when I got my 05. I had it replaced on warranty in 06. A new Thunderbird may be a little different in that it is a brand new motor design.
Harley Davidson has had a lot of problems with their new engine that came out last year. It has taken them a whole year production run to get some unexpected problems ironed out. My friend has had 2 recalls on his.

Not that stupid cheap piece of plastic for the speedo but my actual speedo cable. If the loop was the only problem for that model I would have to say Triumph did a pretty dang good job. I do remember some probs with the early igniters. Fortunately I haven't had a prob there yet.

Vehicles are tested rigorously these days and computer simulations etc pick up defects in design so I'm not worried about the 1st year blues. I'm a bit grumpy that I haven't received any info on colours or options yet. So far it can be blue/white stripe, black or silver. I will option the ABS when I return to Western Australia in a few weeks. Give me the option book dam* it!!!!

I guess I have a lot of faith in Triumph to successfully bring a bike like the new Thunderbird to fruition. I built my own first car and have purchased at least a couple of first year vehicles in my 44+ years of riding and driving vehicles down the road. I'm a mechanic by trade and I am never finished making a vehicle, new or old, my own until I pass it on to the next guy or girl. Personally I'm excited and not afraid of being one of the test riders of this totally new for Triumph, first year model motorcycle. I believe this will be an outstanding sport cruiser, hot road, what ever it gets called, Triumph motorcycle. I'm purchasing one because I have a gut feeling that riding it will be the same as it was the first time, and every time I get on my Speedmaster - just pure excitement. If I didn't have bad knees and steel in my lower back I would probably be riding a mid control Bonneville or a Speed Triple for the fun of it too. Nothing but Triumph for me. A triumph that suits me not just the crowd. Now with that said I just hope that Triumph doesn't make us wait any longer than late June to take them for a ride. I'll be glade to let you all know how good or bad Triumph did in producing this bike and if necessary I will let Triumph know where they can improve things cause I'm sure there will be at least a couple things to make better over time. Right off I already have a few things to customize to my liking.

If I had room in the garage for a third bike (or even better the money) I would like this very much. The Thunderbird1600 forum looks good. Tom

I like it set up like that, still think it needs a bigger tank badge.

Dang!, Them Texans stick together like inbreds, don't they!
Only two kinds of Texans in this thread: Those who are, and those who wish they were.
On to the confession... It was in fact the rumored new big twin that brought me back to Triumph after I had gone without a bike since 2003. (I got a used 2000 Bonnie in 2001 and kept it until fortunes of divorce forced a sale )
I was way revved up on the idea of the Thunderbird at first, however as more details and finally full picture sets came out, my enthusiasm waned. Although I will reserve final judgment until I can ride, or at least sit on one; I don't think I would ever get one. It is not Triumph the brand that gets me going, rather it is the Bonneville style that I like. BA's and Speedies retain a good portion of the classic Brit bike looks, albeit with some cruiser overlay. I had hoped that the new Triumph would have been a 1200 America that weighed the same as current models rather than the bigger, heavier, and just plain different; Thunderbird. I am sure it is a good bike, and it will sell to its intended market, its just not for me. I trust that those who get one will be very happy with its performance.
I will now return to my regularly scheduled bird bashing by pointing out that it looks like the illicit love child of a Honda-Harley-Triumph love fest.

Regarding a "Radiator Forum," as the old ad campaign went, "You're soaking in it." We didn't start a Rocket III forum 4 years ago, so don't hold your breath. It will be interesting to see if someone does start a dedicated Thunderbird cruiser forum, like this site or R3owners.net.

I'm hoping that a there are enough people on this forum get one so that it can be integrated. It's a reasonable, disciplined and generally polite crowd here...too many grown ups I guess

Tank badge? It does looks kinda lame. I'll put an old skool one on if it can be done. I'm not having a go at you Lazy but I've noticed a few contributors saying something to the effect of "not a proper Triumph" What defines a proper Triumph? If it's a Bonnie that's fine. But if it's a Speedy then the T'Bird is not a quantum leap in the other direction. Obviously the T'Bird is aimed at wooing a few HD boys away from their toys, even the anticipated mass of options is sounding like the same marketing HD use, but when I ride with my friends (HD and Ducati riders) I always feel that my Speedy is either missing an extra gear or needs a different sprocket...and mine isn't stock. If I want to do 500Km + a day my guess is the 2010 T'Bird will be more comfortable and responsive at those speeds than a Bonnie. Maybe I'm getting old and want a little more comfort than old skool style. Having said that I wouldn't mind one for around town.
