my first real post want to ask about oil still got mobil 1 but someone said about motul any other options

Yeah, for me there is. I found this write up a few months ago, after someone else here suggested using it. Did a little research, and I'm satisfied. Check these links, and do some research on your own, and I'm sure a whole bunch of BA.Com members will chime in here again, too. Do a search on the subject here on BA.com - this comes up weekly.

I'll pay whatever I have to for a superior product if warranted, but in this case, I think there are superior products that don't cost as much as some might have you pay...

That 5w-40 converts - 15w-50 - I still don't fully understand the viscocity thing, I just know this stuff is shear stable, full synthetic, and has extremely low pour point, and high flash point. And nothing that's going to hurt the transmission, either. That is all I have used, and I have 10k miles. Did the 500 miler, then again at 4k and 8k - I'm sticking with the original maintenance schedule not so much because I have to, but because I enjoy doing the work myself, and look forward to it. I'm satisfied that it is one of the more superior products out there.

G. I went to Wal Mart and bought the Rotella T Shell 5W-40 $14 a gallon and the $2 SuperTech ST7317 filter, its 3.25" long so it extends past the frame on the under side. A $16 oil change beats $8 a quart Mobil 1 V Twin and a $12 triumph filter. There are alot of filter you could use. Here is a partial list of oil filters that others have listed in the past you can buy them at the auto parts store, in no special order: STP SM017, Bosch 3300, Napa Gold 1358/1365, K & N KN-191, ST 6607, Baldwin B1400, Amsoil SMF103C, for those that like a little extra filter area, Purolator Pure One PL14610, Mobil M1-110 and Bosch 3323. Plenty to choose from. The oil is up to you.

Don't use the Napa gold 1365 . It doesn't fit right and you'll get oil blowing out the seal. There have been several posts on this. The 1358 fits fine.

i'm just changed to the 5/40 wt rotella and super tech filter and will see over winter how i like it.

I do run 5/40 syn rotella in my Kawasaki Voy 12, which is water cooled. the bike runs great w/ it.

i figure w/ the winter 30- 40 degree start ups the 5/40 won't hurt. i put on 1000 or so miles every winter here in Neb. also, i might change out the filter in 1000 miles for kicks and see what's up.

i have been using 20/50 mobil 1 v twin and the pure one filter. about dbl the cost of the rotella/super tech setup. if i don't like it, i'm only out 16 bucks.

i did notice that walmart had v twin mobil 1 oil at $7.19 a quart, about 1.50 cheaper than the O'Reily's i used to get it at.

btw, i have a magnetic drain plug and this was my first oil change since i installed it. there was a small build up of metal gunk on the tip. i'm glad i got it... and it was cheap.

Whitch one fit our bikes they do not list Triumph

i think it's the 14mm 1.5thread # 1002M. i'll see if i can find the paperwork in the garage tomorrow. someone else here might know.

and what about motul oil filter I ordered K+N as well as air filter not changing oil now but interested in some options

The dealer put Amsoil Motorcycle specific 10W-40 synthetic in the bike...figure I'll keep using it.

The "All About Oil" link was a very interesting read. I found it really interesting that Mobil 1 is not a synthetic oil, but rather a Group III petroleum oil. The section on oil filters was interesting also. It rated the Amsoil oil filter as the only one of High Quality, but doesn't seem to explain the reason why.

Today I bought 4 quarts of the Motul 5100 Ester 15W50 motorcycle oil, a K&N 191 Oil Filter. I paid $7/quart and $14 for oil filter. Not bad given that it came for a motorcycle repair shop where I live.

It has all the recommended ingredients. I have not had any mechanical problems so far. almost 8500 miles on bike. Time will tell..

If anyone cares, I also use the Shell Rotella T synthetic oil for deisels. I have a lot of miles with it and have not had any problems, even with the extra cubes. I also have both the temp and pressure gauges and they are both exactly where they should be at all times. Life is good at <$20/oil change. No worries from me. In fact, my bike seems to run a few degrees cooler than everyone elses, and I have checked the calibration of the temp gauge.

i have the oil temp gauge coming from brent; it's on bo.

i'm using the rotella t too. also i'm using the super tech filter for 2 bucks. 16 dollars an oil change. at that price i can change it every 2000 miles.

i thought i'd try this combo for winter. so far so good. seems like it starts easier in the cold w/ the 12.99 a gallon rotella t 5/40 weight instead of the mobil 1 v twin $8.00 a quart 20/50.

I run right around the 170ºF mark. It stays there unless I get stuck in a heavy duty traffic jam, then it goes up to 180-190, but quickly back down as soon as i start moving again.
When Benny was here in Sept we checked his compared to mine, with his super duper turbulated cooler he was running higher than me by a lot, closer to 200 at all times. We swapped his stock cooler back on and it dropped down to the 180 range now. We attribute the cooler running on mine to the big bore and more effecient cylinders. I hear most of the regular Bonnie guys over in Delphi are also running quite a bit hotter as well. Around 190 if I remember correctly. Some in excess of 200 at all times. That just seems too hot to me.
We checked the calibration by sticking the business end of the gauges in a pot of boiling water and they both read right at 210ºF, so they are accurate.

165-170 deg.F normal riding and 195-200 deg.F after 10 miles WFO. Ambient temp 70-75 deg.F These numbers are when running 20/50 Amsoil. My temps actually dropped a little when I switched from 10/40 Ams.

I've used the Shell Rotella T all summer, bike ran great, and at those prices I don't mind changeing oil every 3 to 4000 miles. This will be my first winter with the Shell, and I'm sure there will be no problem with cranking it over at startup.
